Im excited to hear about all of our late season traditional experiences.
We'll see how late season with the recurve pans out for me. I could see myself stickin traditional for the long haul.
Shooting that thing is like playing an instrument. That 'feeling' of a great shot is just awesome. Its a beautiful thing. So simple. Raw power.

Let me know if you're able, Phil. I don't have any place picked out per se, just looking at a couple pieces of public ground. I've not been on either of them.

Raw power? You must be shooting a different bow than I am.
Wait until you have a couple deer decide to leave before your arrow gets half way to them...that's usually what makes me hang mine back up. Then again, sometimes they stand still to catch it, and that is SWEET! It's all fun though, and a little variety goes a long way in enjoying most everything.

Im shooting a bear grizzly at 50lbs.
At 15 yards and in the arrow seems to get there pretty quick while target shooting.
Beyond that it begins to 'float' in the air.
I wont be floating any in this year. Going to keep it up close and personal. Now i just need time in the woods!

They do tend to ''hang" at longer ranges. I find it hard to believe that so many deer were killed with 40-45lb bows at 50+ yards in the early days of modern bowhunting. I'm sure a great many were lost too. I know one man personally that killed his first deer with a 43lb bow, the deer was 47 yards! This was in 1960. Funny how things have changed.
I managed to put a slick edge on my snuffers today. Just gonna be a matter of getting them in contact with fur and meat now.

I remember my first foray into this and it was a struggle. I was missing deer like crazy and then shooting pretty good on target. It helps a bunch to get one under your belt..i suggest 10 to 12 yards at first.. i was shaking like a crack whore needing a fix. I wanted it too bad i think and let it all get to me.

Speaking of shooting... I just got a real good reminder of why I don't hunt with trad gear very often. I can't hit the broadside of a barn today...again! I had to just quit and finish up processing my deer. I quit!

Took Mason out for the last couple of hours tonight. Perfect conditions to still hunt, but impossible with a kid and gear in tow. We snuck in close to a bedding area. Bumped three on the way in. I had a shot at a buck, but of course I was not hunting and Mason only had a shot at a doe. We set up on top of a ridge, and were only there a half hour or so when 6 more trotted by us on the neighbor's place. Mason said he had a good shot at one of them, but they were all antlerless and I wouldn't allow him to shoot. I've never told him he could NOT shoot, but there is no way I am gonna let him shoot another deer without horns at this point in the season...and it would have been a heck of a drag out of there! We again had a great time, and thankfully saw some deer!
We saw six more on the road home, one looked to be a buck chasing a doe but it was really too dark to say for sure.

I ordered an Excalibur on Saturday. I should have it by Wednesday. I'm really looking forward to seeing what crossbow hunting is all about!
Tell you what, since I bought the one for Garrett, I am thinking I might have to kill one with it next year as well. There might be some hunts where I still hunt and use it next year. I think leaned up against a tree someplace where you cannot hang a stand would be ideal for a crossbow.

I agree! I've never used one before, but I'm really llooking forward to trying it out. I'm planning to see how those big ugly snuffers fly out of it. I gotta believe that would be a wicked combination!
My initial thoughts:
Wow, that was loud, but not as loud as the older ones.
Holy crap! The penetration into my targets is crazy!
I could get used to using these crosshairs on the scope. Kinda nice!
Maybe when I am old like Brock I can justify using this all the time.:smiley_crocodile:

The UPS man made my day today. I had this thing together and ready to shoot probably within 20 minutes of him pulling out of the driveway. So far, I am duely impressed! I wanted to see if I could get Snuffers to fly out of this thing, and after fooling around with it for an hour or so, I got it dialed in pretty good with those big, nasty heads. Sighted in out to 50 yards. I shoot the thing better off handed, I suspect because it jumps pretty bad when shooting off sticks. It is not as loud as I'd feared it may be, but I will be doing a little tinkering around with it to dampen noise a bit more. I can certainly see why some people love these things! I'm looking forward to taking it hunting soon.

Oh yeah, he was textin while I was aiming the first shot. I kept him well-updated! He only shoots his at 20 and under, but the dang thing is accurate as heck at distance too... but you gotta do it just right to get the most out of it seems to me.
