My plan was to walk the bank edges and straight across where I want it to break and then if at all possible, push it out in to the river and let the river take it down stream. That may be wishful thinking, but it is worth a try...

Quick tip on busting ice this weekend: Do your very best to keep the ice in LARGE chunks. The more you break up the ice the harder it is to clean out the hole... and an ice cube filled shooting hole is not too enticing for the birds. If the ice is thick enough, walk the perimeter of your shooting hole first, then (depending on size) break that hole into 2 or 3 large chunks... Try to push those chunks under the other ice without breaking them. If it's thick enough, you should be able to create a nice shooting hole without the need for a rake at all. Good luck, brother.

Perfect description of how to do it. Great advice Jim.

Here is a look at the spot. The red dot is my preferred spot as any duck I kill, I can retrieve. Hunting near the river raises the issues of losing birds, so we won't shoot anything we can't land in the hole. Our blind will be the blue dot and the green outlined area is the existing ice that will need to be removed for a successful hunt here. We have a forecasted N-NW wind which should be perfect.

I'm so pumped I found this spot!!!

Jesse, do you have permission to hunt from the other side of the stream? With a WNW wind I think you'd be better off on that side... JMO, based solely on the aerial photo of course.

Yes, but there isn't a good place to set up unless you get 100+ yards off the river. Where the blue dot is, there is a clump of brush perfect for a hide. The other side is a straight drop off with no cover.

Ah I see... that sort of sucks. I always hate having to work birds in a crosswind or worse, have them come in from over my shoulder... But shit, when you're given lemons you gotta make duck soup. Wait, that's not right...

Damn, 4:15 is early!!!

Truck is loaded and I'm in route to pick up my buddy. I stopped on the way home from working on the road yesterday and built us a blind. I also put Remi to good use!

He's never been on a duck hunt because he won't pick up dead birds. After watching him break the ice up, I felt he deserved to join us even if it was just for the company. Who knows, maybe he'll put it together today actually being in the moment!

I spotted 3 drake common mergansers in this spot yesterday and there were several canvasbacks south of here a few miles as well. We don't have a huge hole to work with, but it'll have to do. JB gave me some pointers last night, so hopefully we can take lemons and make lemonade today! Stay tuned!!!

You seen my brother yet?

If he was near Frontier High, we did!

And yes, it is addicting as hell. Just got done eating lunch with my buddy and he says: "Yep, I'm hooked!"

We ended up with a drake mallard, and a pair of woodies. But the best part of the day will have to wait. I'm one proud dude right now!!!
