I think maybe it was the GFCI. On the old one, when I tried to plug in the heater (which wasn't on) the GFCI tripped before I could get it plugged in all the way.
The new one let me plug in the heater without tripping.
So, that's my non-electrical, never-stayed-in-a-Holiday-Inn deduction! Hope I'm right!
