The damn weather forecaster throw me a bad curve today. They were calling for rain late afternoon today and real heavy downpours over night and on Sunday. So I figured it would be good timing to get my last food plot seeding done.
I didn't do the planting yesterday being my Anniv. and working on the electric in my man cave. Should have done it yesterday and I could have worked inside today. Oh well too late to change that now.
So at 9:00AM I went down and broadcast my WT Inst. Winter Greens on 1/2 ac. Then planned on rototill the 1.0 ac. for the WT Inst. Forage Oats and plant the oats today.
It started light sprinkle when I was broadcasting the Winter Greens and when finished there was a heavy downpour for about 5 minutes.
I really don't think it will be too wet so I'll check in couple hours and I may still be able to get the oats in today. The weather forecast calls for rain off and on for 7 days so it would be good timing to plant.

Went out to the food plot at 3:00PM to check the soil moister. It was fine and the ground was still nice and soft from when I rototilled it so I just ran a disk across it to breakup the surface.
I hooked up my 3 pt. spreader to sow the WT. Inst. Forage Oats. What a great job and just 5 passes to do the 100 ft. wide 1.0 ac. plot. Excellent coverage. Sure the hell beats using the hand crack shoulder bag seeder.
I learned from last years mistake and set the spreader setting at 50% and spread the seed or fertilizer 2 times. A farmer friend explained that to me. I sow seed with the hand crank shoulder bag the same way.
Then I went across the seeded area with my fence drag. I need to find a culdapacker in stead of using the fence drag.
Now I'll just let nature take it's course. It's been a good growing season with having rain every week this year. Heavy rain forecasted for tonight and tomorrow.

Took advantage of the low temp. and cut brush and trash trees below my backyard overlook onto my food plots. Got most of it cut then it started to rain. I had my chainsaw stuck and had to use a hand saw and got wet to the bone. Working in heavy downpour rain and trying to play phone tag with the wife. She's trying to tell me it's going to rain hard. Hell I knew that. LOL
Got some more to do but not today. At least I will be able to see more than 10% when I'm done. I'll put a playhouse my SIL built for the granddaughters. I'll be high and dry in there. Be comfy and out of sight to.

Just about finished on the trash tree cutting. Just need to clean up some of the branches in the way. That damn osage orange is tough to cut and the damn thorns are rough on the skin. I cut 6-8"suckers 30 ft. tall off a 18" tree we cut down 15 yrs. ago.
I forgot to take a before picture but I could only see the far end 150 yds. away and a area 30x50. Now I can see about 50% of the 3.0 ac. plot.
Going to make a quick and easy sniper spot for gun season in the future when It's tougher for me to get around. Now I'll just use the spot for deer watching.

Winter picture with the snow and leaves off. Notice all the tree branches sticking up. It would have been tough shooting.

The cliff where the picture was taken is about 40 ft. high to the creek below.

Today after trimming trash trees. I'm going to try and knock some more of that osage orange tree on the left top for a better view of the woods enterance into the food plot.

Sniper shack that will be placed on the food plot overlook. Shots will be 50-200 yds.

Very nice Frank. Hope it works out for you. Looks pretty cool (the shack). Should be a great view if nothing else.

I bush hogged the 2 clover patches to knock down the Queen Ann Lace weeds. They are terrible this year. This the 3rd mowing so they don't go to seed. I mow it about 12" high just enough to knock off the weed seed tops.
Also mowed my grass patch. I don't know what the hell happened here as I had the grass and weeds kill off to the ground before rototilling and seeding. The new grass is much thicker than the old pasture ever was.
Next year I will work on killing off the weeds and grass in the 2 clover plots. I have does feeding in the clover every night I check.

The WT Inst. Forage oats I planted 7 days ago is looking good. I had such good luck with 1/2 ac. in 2013 I planted 1.0 ac this year.

The 1/2 ac. volunteer Forage Oats I tilled under on 7-12. Plus I planted WT Inst. Winter Greens 7 days ago. I throw in some Merit radish and some Frigid Forage radish and beets mix since I was doing just a surface planting.
It's looking real good.

The deer really seem comfortable in this 3.0 ac patch as it's surrounded on all 4 sides with trees. My overlook is far enough away that they don't seem to notice as long as your not moving around. A permanent sniper shack will fit right in.

Thanks guys. I just read a interesting article in Whitetail Inst. Whitetail News.
It's called "For the Love of the Hunt'. If you have a chance to go on line and read it I would do so. It really hit home why I go through all this just to deer hunt. There is no better way to explain my $10,000 investment in farm equipment and about $600 expense per year to plant 3.0 ac. for a deer food plot. It surely isn't for a small amount of deer meat. My only regret is I didn't start 23 yrs. ago when I bought the farm. Oh well I'll try and make up for it. Bigger and better plans for 2015 and later this year.
The article goes into "understanding Hunting is not just killing". It's the love of hunting.
Now I have better way to explain to my wife my love of deer hunting plus the pain and suffering plus bother I go through to hunt and get ready for it.
Plus it's just fun.

I cut down the last big osage orange tree yesterday to open up the view I wanted on my food plot from my overlook. Now I can see about 2.0 ac. of the 3.0 ac. plot. The fence corner in the upper left is exactly 200 yds.
We had cut down 1/2 of this osage orange tree 15 yrs. ago and it already had 8" sucker limbs growing on it 30 ft. high. Those damn trees are a bear to remove as they are rough on saws and hard on the skin.
Now I need to move the sniper shack. We'll use the view to dump our deer kill scraps for a coyote kill area. Hopefully.

A 200 yd. picture of the volunteer oats and WT Inst. Winter Greens. The greens are about 10" high now. As soon as the heavy frost hits the deer should flock to it.

Thanks guys. I really don't plan on using it for hunting in the near future. It's for deer watching at this point. As I get older it'll be used for hunting but I don't plan on that for a long time yet. Hope so anyway.
