2014 youth gun season

Not to fond of the way the youth season is done here in Ohio.
Back home it's the full week and youth hunters can use rifles during primitive firearms season. Plus on public lands everything else shuts down but youth hunting.
That's the way it should be..maybe even allow them to use the normal youth rifles that OH bans otherwise (.243, 7mm-08, etc.)..They should have as many advantages as possible to have a safe and ideally successful time hunting.

I have two kids. No way would I expect rules to be changed for them or for other hunters to have to give up the woods for the weekend. Some guys only have weekends to hunt.

A kid needs to earn a kill or there will be no respect given. Giving them all the cards in there favor is great except it can make things too easy. The kid who hunts hard and kills one will become a better hunter than the kid who kills one after sitting on a stump for 10 minutes staring at a corn pile with a rifle. My brother is hunting today and I almost hope he doesn't get a shot because I want him to earn it first. I hope he sees deer to get his interest peaked but not an easy kill. Call me crazy but I'm right.
Yeah I think it's a pretty good system so far.... My son and a couple of his buddies (now mid 20's) took advantage of it when it first came in and it worked out pretty well as far as giving them the opportunity that is.... I think between both youth weekend and gun season as well as muzzleloader the days allowed exceed their ability to get out with school and all..... You have after school but if any amount of drive time is involved you're really pushing the time before it's too late.....

I agree 100% and well written. If done any other way there would be a lot of pouching going on by scumbags.

The grandson went out this morning for a deer to turn into jerky. Seen 1 doe and he passed. He's taken 2 does in the past and want's his 1st buck. I can respect that but gee does make into jerky to then take a buck later.
Youngins thought process lol.... Sometimes takes different twists Frank lol..... You of all should know that lol.....

My brother and nephew have been sitting all morning in the freezing rain (in my stand lol), just got a text they are watching two does. I hope a buck shows up for them

You are right..but as in a response to what I said it doesn't address it at all. But I won't really get into it because I seem to be the odd man out here.
Quick example though: My little brother wanted to hunt but didn't have the biggest interest in it, well he finally got to go, first hunt he pops a cull buck, second hunt he drops a 250 lbs. pig... Did he think it's too easy and lose interest? Nope, exact opposite..he's got the fire now..And I know of plenty similar situations where a kill or a action packed hunt sparked a kid that before didn't have a huge interest.
We are talking the next generation of hunters, it's important we invest in them if that means giving up a weekend or a week doesn't bother me, I wish I had a kid up here to take out hunting this weekend.. actually was going to try to fly my little bro up, maybe next year if I'm still around.
Different areas different ways of thinking..didn't expect that reception at all, local forum I'm active on every single member would have backed that statement.
But it's all good ya'll seem like good fellas, opinions on many things just vary a hell of a lot between Southerners and Northerners... most of the time neither is wrong or right, just different backgrounds..

My son is a great example of how quick first hunts can spoil them, at first. Last year he shot a turkey with the crossbow first day out and first deer hunt he killed the spike that night. His next hunt he missed a doe and you would have thought he got caught steeling. Took him a little while to understand that's part of hunting, even for him. This year he has been humbled by a couple of sits that did not amount to him killing a deer and even the last sit he did end up passing a 4 point at like 10 yards. I think it is important to express to them before you go out that nothing is a guarantee and even if things go right today, well tomorrow is another story.
As for youth seasons go I do like the opportunity they provide as there are so many distractions at this age that could definitely take them elsewhere. When I was a young kid I didn't have sports out side of school that took me in different directions from hunting. Nowadays you have all kinds of travel sports, year round baseball, softball, soccer, etc. and not to mention video games that keep them busy. Yeah, we need youth hunts to help keep this thing we all love passing down through our kids and grand kids.

Nothing wrong with your thought process DoubleJ. I could argue either end of this one. Just different opinions. Neither wrong in my mind. I respect both sides here.

Which has a super lenient deer season compared to Ohio (But it's really comparing apples to oranges since terrains and holding capacities vary greatly between the 2) ,and an altogether different hunting culture...
So it's only natural that We'd see things differently on some topics.. Although I do like the season structure a little better up here since I mostly just bow hunt.

Never known any different but I'm happy with the way it is here. I was able to go out in my blind this morning with the crossbow and a few miles down the road my buddy's daughter shot a buck at first light. He is taking the other daughter tomorrow and I will be back in my blind.
We seen 8 last night no shots. My nephew got cold feet so we left a little early. No use in making there first hunt miserable for them.

Don't know what's goin on but my brother just text me and said it sounds like a war just south of our property. I don't know if they let kids into the park area where Bthompson has been hunting or if a bunch of local guys are walking the park and running deer around lol
