Wow! He looks amazing in this picture. Such a bummer Mason shot high. Great experience and memories to take away. Can't put a price tag on such moments.

Thank you guys so much for the hospitality this weekend. I have this feeling Garrett will be pushing for a repeat visit every year. We both had a blast.

I'm working on loading the actual video from the handycam. I know I've said it a hundred times, and if I were you all, I'd be sick of hearing me say it, but dangit, I'm proud of this kid! I don't know how many folks could keep it together like he does waiting for an ethical shot. If he were using a 300 fps bow, this deer doesn't live. As it is, he needs to be dead on with yardage. His little bow shoots well, but it's slow relative to todays big-boy bows. I remember when judging yardage was a big deal, when I shot bows that actually arched arrows, and 5 yards equals a missed deer every time. He did everything right, beat this deer in every respect of the game, with the exception of knowing exactly how far it was. He was due to learn this lesson, we've all had to.

I don't think the game is over with this deer, or the other two. This dude was back at 230 this morning. :)

You guys are welcome any time! If I decide not to keep that property, I've got plenty more... :)

Brock, reading your and Phil's accounts of this weekend is really getting me pumped for my trip. Can't wait to meet you and Mason in person and hunt this property. It's only a little over 3 weeks away now!

Best of luck AJ. Hopefully Garrett didn't kill the one doe you were holding out for. I will tell you there are plenty of does in this particular stand location. In three weeks I would imagine things will be starting to heat up pretty good for you. Make sure to stop in at Big City Pizza and listen to the story tellers in there. Whew. Not sure who owns that place, but they pull in some dandies. lmao

I'm looking forward to your visit as well! I really enjoyed the legwork prior to Phil and Garrett coming down. I think you will have a great hunt, there are quite a few deer on this piece. While Phil was dressing Garrett's deer, the neighboring menonite stopped to see what was up. He said the guys that leased the property previously did not shoot many does, "They were just after the big racks", and apparently had some success with that. Plus, a father of one of the boys on our baseball team told me yesterday that he killed his buck last year across the road from the farm you'll be hunting. He had apparently watched it cross the road three nights in a row, killed it on night 4. It was a mid-150's. There are good ones around, hopefully you and Pete will get a look at 'em! Phil got a little peak at Dean's place too, though he did not get to meet the legend as he was at the store. I think Phil can verify you'll have a nice place to sleep in a redneck paradise. Dean was at our game Sunday too, and asked how "my hunters" did. I told him, "Killed at 735am Saturday"... he asked what took so long. :)

I'm going to take that as a compliment... it's a liar's club for sure, especially around deer season.

Pete and I will have no problem knocking down a few does if that's needed. Don't get me wrong we'd both love to kill a giant but we'll be happy to hunt an area with a good deer population. It's just not like that here.

By the way I watched the video on the Holly Hills website. Dean looks like quite the character. Can't wait to meet him. Place looks great TOO.

Great friggin read Brock!!! Nice recap of Phil and Garrett's hunts and you and Masons! He learned a lot in that missed opportunity as we all have and I'm sure his fire burns even hotter. You're are absolutely right that he beat that deer in every aspect but just not knowing the correct yardage.
Hope he gets another shot opportunity at him or another of your target deer pretty soon. It'll happen I'm sure and knowing Mason he prolly won't make the same mistake twice.
Good luck you guys!!! Again, great job in making Phil and Garrett's trip a success!!!

I will NEVER say doe killing is needed, but you are welcome to shoot 'em if you'd like. I like seeing deer, and the only way to see deer is to not kill them. I hope I'm not coming off wrong, you really are welcome to shoot them, but don't feel like you need to for herd management, etc. This is your hunt, I want you fellas to do/shoot whatever you'd like to in an effort to enjoy yourselves! I've been known to shoot a doe or two myself, nothing wrong with it, but no culling effort encouraged here.... hope you get what I mean. :)
