"...he has squirrel shooting on his mind." who in their right mind doesn't? LOL... wasn't that a Willie Nelson song? rotflmao

I'm looking forward to it, too. it really is fun for me to watch others shooting squirrels over the dogs.

I left Lefty home today to work with Slick. we covered a bunch of ground, but he only found one squirrel. he missed one other that I had an easy shot at, but I didn't shoot it since he didn't tree it. He found several obvious dens and a couple of nests that I'm confident there were squirrels in, and I did tie him and shoot the one out. plus I found another nice shed today. It is goddamned hard to leave Lefty behind, but I really have to get Slick as much field time as possible, and he needs to work alone as much as possible. I suspect that squirrels were not moving to good today, and we were not in the best places, but Slick did some quality work today. He jumped a rabbit right in front of me and started to chase it, but I was able to call him off of it without zapping him since I was so close. he's a gamey little bastard. wants to chase everything, even birds occasionally. Lefty was the same way his first season.

two sheds in three days. this ties the most sheds I've found in an entire season, lol. both of them on public hunting ground, too. the one on the right is the one I found today. I pretty much tripped over both of them, which is the only way I ever find them.

Fantastic! Mason will have to suffer along with the little scopes we mounted to get him by. I just two sets of rings as I have the wrong ones for him currently. If he misses, he will use the smaller scopes as his excuse... mark that down, I know how this will go. :)

Slick will be a super star by next season, I have no doubt.

we headed south to Hocking county today. suffice it to say that the farm I hunt there has been disappointing two years straight. we covered most of the property and Slick treed the only squirrel we saw all day. He beat Lefty to the punch on this one because Lefty was lollygagging around, pissing on bushes and not really hunting. Slick was hunting, and got it done. Nancy made it dead. We drove a little further and hit a nice chunk on Zaleski that produced a total of three empty trees; one for Slick, two for Lefty. plus we bumped into a little Mexican (well, Hispanic. could have been Costa Rican, Nicaraguan, Honduran, or other for all I know) dude, who was quite friendly, in the middle of BFE carrying a shotgun wearing orange head to toe. told me he was hunting boar. well, alrighty then. rotflmao clearly, that was a sign from the cosmos that it wasn't happening for us today. we headed for the truck and came home with one squirrel and 12 sore legs. try again tomorrow.

Btw, we shot 9 squirrels, saw three deer, several hawks and a bald eagle. Not a bad way to spend a mid-January day.

I had a great time following you all around! I'll elaborate more when I have time. It really is fun to watch the dogs and listen to you and Mason go back and forth. Thanks for the invite! Might have to get one of these 10/22s ready.

yessiree, that was another excellent day of squirrel hunting. happy you could make it this time, Giles. 9 squirrels this time of year is an impressive haul no matter how you slice it. dogs hunted good for us, finding two or three den trees/nests for every squirrel we saw. squirrels just don't always cooperate. Slick even nailed another one on his own today, and it happened to be the last one of the day. shooters did ok again today, too. it seems we forgot to take a final hero pic, though. dang it.

I was really amazed at how well Slick did. Pretty unbelievable that he's just a puppy. He didn't have any of that teenage crap you usually see in an 8 month old dog. Really really impressed with him.

I liked Lefty's stroll he takes through the woods. He doesn't miss much.

It was cool to watch both dogs work while listening to Mason and Brock give each other shit all day. By the time I left Mason was flipping me the bird, I loved it! Lol

The biggest smile I seen from Jamie all day (Jamie smiles all the time) was when he had to free hand a shot, standing on one toe, using only one hand, his off eye and a mirror...just to show off!

Brock pulled off a pretty impressive shot too. Using that little Cricket...rain in his face...80 yards out...dropped that rat and still had a couple shells left.

I liked the way Mason was teasing you about that little gun before we even left. "Why do you even need a sling on it?" Then he was falling down and lagging behind all day. That thing worked out pretty damn good. Although I'm sure he'll never admit that dad might of been on to something, I know better. Lol

Tony, that fella is bird sick! It was like teasing my dogs by knocking on the wall or saying "who's hear"! That dude would hear a goose from Lake Erie and be locked in. Seemed like a hell of a nice guy, even if he did support "change", lmao.

Jamie still can't figure out what I'm good for, so I have that going for me.

All in all it was a hell of a lot of fun and I seriously almost called into work to finish the day with them. Who would've known that a day of walking through the woods with a couple of dogs would've been so fun! then add Lefty and Slick, it was a great time! Now my ass is ready for bed.

Thanks again for the invite!

Neither can the rest of us.

Sounds like a great day guys.

We were interrupted by a goat delivery....:)

yes, that was a bit out of the ordinary for the end of a squirrel hunt. almost as unusual as bumping into a Mexican Boar hunter in the middle of Zaleski State Forrest. my squirrel season is turning into a Quentin Tarrantino movie. dare I even ask "what next"? rotflmao

Giles did manage to spot a dinky little grey squirrel that Lefty treed from about 80 yards out in a pouring rain, which none of the rest of us managed. rather wish he hadn't because then Brock pulled up his Cricket and nailed the thing while standing next to Giles which meant I had to dive into the head high briars on a very steep bank during said downpour and fight the dog for the damn squirrel!

after two full days of hunting and traveling, dogs completely whooped at the end of the day yesterday. me, too. Poor Slick has been asleep since we got to the end of Brocks driveway. except for walking to the house, to his food dish, out to do his business once, he hasn't moved. still sleeping. they work pretty hard for me. I jiggled Lefty's collar just now to see if he is ready to go again. he just laughed at me and walked away. :smiley_bril:
