Frame repairs

Toyota put a time limit and a bunch of stipulations on the frame recall. Which is shit but I can understand because it is a complete frame replacement and requires the entire truck to be disassembled, my old boss at work had his done under the recall and I think the total was around 11k parts and labor on the zero balance due invoice

I believe there were multiple options too. For example: we buy the truck back at 50% over Blue Book value and sell you a new truck at cost (as an option). There were people buying ragged out turds for $1500 and having them bought back for lots of money. I understand this reasoning. However, I'd be willing to accept zero dollars and a new frame. I want the truck. It is nice.

After reading this posting I went out and got under my 2001 Tundra with 56K miles and the frame rails look brand new. Was it just certain production runs?

I'm not sure Frank. Some of them could have rusted in other areas maybe? Frame was already repaired? My buddy has a 2004-2006 range Tundra and he said all they did was coat his frame with something. I don't think they were all bad. Maybe it was only certain production runs?

I know the frame wasn't repaired. The original owner was my son's FIL. Truck was garaged all the time and wasn't driven much in the last 6-8 yrs.

Well this project finally got started. Whoa boy. Took cap, bumper, and bed off truck. Not terrible. Leaf spring bolt was seized to the sleeve which in turn was fused to the rubber bushing. That sucked. Finally got passenger side apart. Burnt up my angle grinder on the last project. It had enough in it to use on a limited basis today. Bought another one tonight. Little bit of grinding left, weld prep work, and then welding into place. Driver's side should be easier because we learned a lot today. Then again, probably not because we will need to drop the gas tank. Ugh.

Probably a good thing I didn't put this off any longer than I did. Driver's side seems to have gotten much worse since last June when I bought it. Put roughly 5000 miles on it since then. It took one more Ohio winter. Amazing how quickly it is deteriorating.

Should be in the house sleeping. Supposed to have freezing rain in early morning hours. I just cannot stop. I was so close to being able to tack the frame repair pieces up. . . I just had to. Well you all know how that goes. Can't just tack them on. Need to lay some beads of weld. Not done but think I'm done for tonight.

Good shit Phil, go over the brake/gas lines to see if any need any work while that bed is off. Always easier when it’s off then on lol...

Already told my foreman we aren't putting that bed back on until every inch of the frame is inspected. I'll be wire wheeling, inspecting, hitting with POR15 and whatever other protection it needs. Halfway thought about swapping the fuel pump while it was accessible. I'm not. This means it will go out a few days after we put the bed back on.

Spray down the threads of the straps cause it’ll make it easier when you drop that tank in a few weeks to change it lmao...

Already done. We need to drop the tank to do the driver's side frame repair.

Passenger side is done. Welding is far from art but definitely functional. It will hold. I did go back over a few places I wasn't happy with and add some more weld. Wire wheeled passenger side. Hit it with one can of spray paint. I'll probably empty a second can on there before adding a couple cans of spray on undercoating.

Driver's side looks much better for the most part. There were some tight sections along top of frame and under the cab of the truck I really would have liked to have seen prettier. Maybe if I were an actual welder rather than hobbyist they would. Again, functionally I have no fears. They will hold. At least the ones that "might" be seen by someone look better than the passenger side. Some of these I had to do a lot of filling and stitching in order to make them secure. There simply was no metal left to weld to. Filling it and stitching over the top gives me plenty of confidence it is Stout. Also made for some fatter/uglier welds but I don't care. I just want them to be rock solid for years to come. Unfortunately, I found additional frame which will need to be repaired. It was not covered/strengthened by the repair panels. Oh well. Ordered another section. Awaiting delivery.

Might be a duplicate in here. Still learning the new format of website. Like I said, not the prettiest, better than passenger side, not horrible. I've definitely seen better and worse. They'll hold.
