Need some assistance

Hello gents. Been absent for a long while. Anyways. Good to be back. I had some questions that I know you knowledgeable fellows could help me with.

I finally found a decent old Corn planter (John Deere 246/247) at a good price, making my food plot implement collection complete. So now for the seeds.

I'm in need of corn seed (non RR), forage soybean seed (possibly Eagle seed), Eagle Seed broadside and not to mention a couple of other things. Where do you guys get your seed from and how much am I looking? I'll need probably around 50# of corn and 100-150# of soybeans. I live in Medina county if that helps at all. Thanks again guys!

Call John Winegard at Merit Seed in Berlin. Can't begin to tell you how much it'll run you, but I know John is great to deal with and Merit is the only place I go to for seed now.

If you have a Rural King by you they sometimes have some pretty good deals on corn and soybean seed. Don't believe that they carry the eagle brand though.

Id try to buy your corn at a local mill. They know what seed grows best in a given area. And may be more tolerant to disease prevalent to the area.

Merit seed carries both types of eagle seed large lad and manager mix. It is 75-90 bucks an acre to plant.

Corn varies but I’ve seen 115-150 for RR corn at rural king. I’d be shocked if merit didn’t sell that though as he sells into the AG business as well.

Definitely go with merit if you're set on Eagle beans. 50# per acre through a planter and 75-100# per acre of broadcasting. Midwest Managers Mix is 92.50 per bag. Not cheap...but it's good shit.

Corn is very expensive. Call your local wildlife specialist at the soil and water office... They may have a hookup on free or cost-share seed. Also don't forget a local PF chapter.

Last year I went toKindron sporting goods. Little Amish place. Good people. They had the same world beans- cost was less than eagles.

This year I’m buying seed at 1/3 cost from a buddy who farms. Just general old ag beans that’ll hold pods well into winter.

I planted Tyrone Forage Soybeans a couple of years ago and I put an electric fence around them for a few weeks until it got established. I had places that I measured where they were 68" tall. They did really well.

Looks great! I'm not gonna be able to fence it. Just hoping some milorganite and other crops will help alleviate some browsing pressure.

If you plant enough acres then you don't need to fence. I planted about an acre or so. You can use an solar fencer. That is what I use. This is it around an fall brassica plot..

I go to the local co-op and get last year's seed for free or just a few bucks a bag. Not sure if you can get the same deal if they have any left over. For food plots it's always worked out good for us.

Well, pulled the trigger on Rural King corn, Eagle Seeds Managers Mix, a couple kinds of sweet corn from Merit Seed and a field pumpkin mix from Deer Creek Seed (figures I'd try something crazy). Plus, got the old planter new seed runner opener installed and painted, lubed and greased. Now we just have to get some warm weather [emoji58]

I'm hoping! That field will be 2 acres of a corn mix plus 1/2 acre of pumpkins. So even if the deer don't eat the pumpkins, the kids will have some time carve come Halloween. Win win either way!

They might eat pumpkin vine but i can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt they won't eat actual pumpkins. Made that mistake once. Alexs buddy has a farm market and after season they had a bunch of them. I asked alex to grab me a truck bed full and just dump em in the yard while I was at work. I came home to a mou tain of fuckubg pumpkins. I forgot that he had a Dodge 2500 with a full sized bed. He mounded those suckers. Lugged all those pumpkins out there to two properties and put cams on them. The deer didn't eat a single bite.

Deer will eat pumpkins. Not saying they will draw them, but I have seen them eat them out of the garden. Usually late in the fall. They bust them open and then eat them.
