Dealing with dogs - Advice?

I own acerage two hours from where I live. I pay the property taxes, put plenty of money and time away from the family into the property. The neighbors rent the property/dilapidated trailers out to child molesters and felons who can’t live anywhere that requires a background check or consistent rent payments. These folks have 5 pits that live outside and run wherever they please. They’ve approached me before but I let a .45acp go off into the ground.
Between stepping in dog poop in the yard, worried about them biting one of us, and having them on my trail cameras running deer daily, I’m at the end of my patience. I’ve spoken to the property owner who couldn't care less. No use talking to the low life dog owners who don’t even take care of their animals. What would you do? I’ve woken up at 2am to drive two hours and allowed them to ruin dozens of hunts.

I’d call animal control. Also call the police and file a report. If you have pics of them on your property, you can file a complaint and take them to court. A judge isn’t going to let them off easily if you voice your concerns about five pit bulls getting at your children. I’ve done this with my neighbor who would constantly let their dogs run loose. I had pics of them on my property and in my koi pond. Also had video that I burned onto a dvd to show the judge. After the judge told them of the fines and restitution for damage done to my pond, I never had trouble again. The judge also said that if it happened again just one time within a 6 month period, I could call and file charges again and that the court would hit them with the harshest penalty allowed by the law. I wouldn’t shoot the dogs though...it’s not their fault that they have @ssholes for owners. Good luck.

Beyond filing charges with the sheriff, the local game warden can do something about harassment of wildlife if you have proof.

I agree about not taking the law into your own hands. That’s a very slippery slope you don’t want turned around on you.

I have dog issues on the five acres I own. The neighbor did something about it, but there are more dogs now. They ran a real nice buck last Sunday evening.

Unless they are acting aggressive toward you or are in the process of attacking your livestock, it's my understanding that you can't legally shoot them. I don't think I've ever read a law that said anything about a collar. Here's the ORC concerning when you can legally kill a dog: http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/955.28. It's interesting to note that if a dog is attacking your cat or another dog, you can't kill it.

If I remember right, he also shot them on the owners property, not his....

Once you mention the S words on an open forum, you’ve already built a case against yourself.... IMHO....

I don't know about that one. Ohio law defines dogs and cats as companion animals and says nothing about them becoming classified as wild if their collar isn't on. Goddard's law specifically deals with companion animals.

(1) "Companion animal" means any animal that is kept inside a residential dwelling and any dog or cat regardless of where it is kept, including a pet store as defined in section 956.01 of the Revised Code. "Companion animal" does not include livestock or any wild animal. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/959.131

Put up an enclosed kennel, dogs on your property bait it into the kennel. Lock his ass in it call the animal control/sheriff and let them deal with it... Or leave him in it while you go hunt. Release when you’re done.... Repeat.....

Or start trapping yotes. Non-target catches happen all the time. If you accidentally get a 'companion animal' just turn it over to animal control.
