How many of us have cut ourselves while gutting? I have. Thought I did at Strouds...you guys seen what I did at that point. Drunk ass with a knife in the dark...no thanks, I’ll take this matter into my own hands. You guys all laughed, but it wasn’t worth my drunken as cutting my hand open. I’d rather be disgusted and look like a fool.

I’m tired of talking about this already but still want to hit on Ash trees and other general tree identification/surroundings. Or someone else can take the torch for a while.

Lazy explaination. Do not climb these trees or climb in the area of them. These be falling at a rapid rate this year!

I have a pretty good healthy fear of falling. I only use ladder stands and have a life line at each one that I clip onto my harness before I start climbing. Might be over cautious but falling 15 feet would take the fun out of hunting for me and I have a family to take care of.

Years ago we lived in Michigan. My wife was a floor nurse and she would come home and remind me it was deer season. Now, this is long before I ever thought about deer hunting so I never paid attention to the dates. She always knew because they had a bunch of new patients from falling out of tree stands and none were in good shape after the fall.

Guys, this is for everyone to use. I got to thinking about this and how many new hunters come along on TOO and ask for help, we never bring this stuff up...and these should be the basics we don’t overlook. I hope to see this thread really take of and be linked to those new hunter threads.

Heard on the local news that this weekend a hunter fell from his stand around the I-70/675 area. Had to Medivac him to the hospital.

Also talked to a friend of mine this past week and he had a buddy fall, while using his climber to shimmy down the tree. They were hunting by Paint Creek. Some of the particulars are kind of sketchy but my friend said that he got a very faint call from his buddy saying that he fell. He rushed over to his partner and found him at the base of the tree, face full of blood. After a while the injured hunter said that he thought that he could make it to the truck. Well after a short distance he became light headed and said that he could not go on any further.

My friend hauled ass back to the truck and went to get a 4 wheeler and eventually got him back to the truck and to the hospital. The hospital then Midivaced him to a hospital in Dayton. He ended up with a broken (cracked vertebrate?)back and neck. Don't ask me how he walked out of there as far as he did. He did not use a safety rope while climbing up or down!

When ladder stand climbing always use the three point contact with the stand. Both hands and one foot minimum. Always think about your next move and play out what would happen with a slip.... Don’t overload yourself with gear that would take away from your ability to maintain contact with that stand......

That stand should be rock solid with no side too side movement when ascending or descending....

I like the wrap around shooting rail as well, just another item to keep you from falling out if you have a misstep.....

Know your surroundings. Just because everything was just peachy last time doesn’t mean it is this time. The weather this fall has changed my woods multiple times. Between saturated ground, wind and an ice storm, I’ve got downed trees and branches everywhere. Some still hanging in tree tops. Slight breeze could bring any of those crashing to the ground and I know I’m a slow runner.

I saw this on Steve Bartylla's FB page earlier this year and just remembered it when I started reading this thread. It is only $50 at Wal-Mart (not sure if in all stores). It is designed to slowly lower you once you have fallen. Not a bad price either for peace of mind and a great stocking stuffer! LOL!

I think it was Cole I was talking to earlier this year about a hunt plan. Make a plan, share it with someone and stick to that plan. He happened to carry a GPS tracker with alert capabilities. Smart young fella.

This is really important when hunting alone. Tell someone you will get ahold of them at a certain time, if you don’t, they need to come look for you in said area or send help to said area.

Back to the gutting thoughts. I explained to my old man what I thought would be a perfect gutting knife and he found a guy that made custom blades. They came up with this. Works great, but I never seem to have it when I need it.
