5 coon out of 9 traps this morning. 3 boar & 2 sow. In the late 90s this would have been a hundred dollar bill. Today they sadly aren't worth putting a knife to. The landowner is happy however and I got to help protect some endangered species.

What do you use for bait? I like using jumbo marshmallows or peeps.

Regular size marshmallows and cheap cat food. My traps have a rear cleanout door and use a pull trigger. I found that the big marshmallows pushed the trigger. The regular one's get back under the trigger without having to load it from the back and they don't push the trigger.

Jumbos do push ever so slightly against the trigger on mine as well. But I've yet had one steal a marshmallow and not be there in the morning. Turns it into a hair trigger, especially after the sear is filed and buffed. 🤪

Oh no ain't no stealing them that's for sure. You know I have never found a marshmallow or piece if cat food at a catch site. Greedy bastards get caught and still finish their meal.

If I was enjoying a nice steak at a restaurant and the table latched ahold of me, the last thing on my mind would be finishing my meal.

Amazing back in the day them coons bought me and family Xmas presents , food, was another way to provide for the family. I believe my Dad mad more money coon hunting than what he did at work.
He hunted a walker and that dog was badass. Nothing like coon hunting and watching that dog and coon go at it. Ahhh memories...

What is your club and many swings needed?

They're coon. I've come to realize it doesn't much matter what you club them with they're tough. Last year I had a foot and a half piece of shovel handle with a 4 inch piece of black pipe fitted over the end. It was heavy and in more than one occasion it took 10+ strikes. After 3 I start to feel like a serial killer. 😅. Now I have a two foot piece of rebar with two washers welded on the end. I hit them 2-3 times to knock them out then roll them over and stand on their throat. Within a minute or two they go limp. Usually by the time I'm done resetting. Humane as they simply suffocate while unconscious.

Although I did walk past the pile this morning and there was one not covered in snow. He was out but still warm. Felt bad about that one. I don't like shooting them, messes up the deer hunting and just makes a bloody mess when you have to carry them.

I made one like that in high school shop but with two large nuts solidly welded on the end. It worked well but got a soft heart and took a .22 after thinking about it more.
