Jackalopes Ohio trapping thread (Coonapalooza)

Only takes one if you knock them on the bridge of there nose.

Interesting. I'll try that as I've been hitting them between the ears, or if standing sideways the base of the skull. Usually once to knock them out and then a well aimed followup. It knocks them out cold but if left alone they'll regain composure.

I've been using the .45 with frangible bullets cause I'm forced to shoot towards the road. I make sure theres nothing coming but still dont want any pass through at all. I absolutely love these things, only thing that has ever passed through are tiny slivers of jacket that hardly stick into the 2x12s behind the traps. Not cheap though.

Yeah, not always a guarantee but, I’ve found most of my catches one good one there they go down then instead of the neck I’ll do the chest. I’ve even done yotes that way in a pinch, although not preferred as that can get a little hairy😅

Ok so the step is still required. I don't have trouble knocking them out with a blow. It would be nice if you could just whack them one or two good times and then toss them aside to expire while you reset. With a coon though it's a guarantee they'll come back to life

Unfortunately. They are tough critters, I had one meet me when I opened the tailgate once after finishing the line, and he was from the first stop, nor was the the last one in the truck and had a hole between the eyes from a 22 mag. That thing had to have just slipped past the important parts lol.

Crazy. The only thing I've ever found to be tougher than a coon is a house cat.

After I ran out of frangible bullets I decided to use standard federal HPs through the .40 when I had one in the coup but hiding under the eaves between the metal roof and mesh screen. So I shot him through the screen, which exited and left a fist size hole in the dang roof. Theres a similar hole in the T1-11 siding thanks to a possum.
Coons can be quite aggressive that's for sure, I got in a gun fight with one in the driveway. They can be hard to hit when they're running after you. Ya I'm the neighbors entertainment.

I'm contemplating taking the class and running some coon traps just to learn. It'd also be good for the farm. What's wrong with a 22lr pistol with a suppressor?

If the pelts aren't worth much I'll not mess with them.

Nothing, I run a 22 mag revolver and even with a head shot no loss in value as they don’t buy for the heads or tails. Joe is just looking for a quiet non bloody way. “ cervical dislocation “ or suffocation is not an uncommon means of dispatch tho.

Stop killing the opossum...they eat those ticks that you really hate.

Keep talking though, this is funny! I think we know now why you and the ole lady were doing drywall. Must’ve been a spider in the house! 😂
