Give it some time for the human sent to wear away. Shoe smell and stuff wouldnt hurt to take a thin stick about a foot away and take and tie on some feathers, white ones like turkey if you can find them . It helps, especially if out in open field as a visual atractant. Good luck Jim, its exciting every morn u head out. Patients is key. Once sent wears away youll get some.

You're already winning. Keep enjoying the time with your shadow. I remember those days well. Today my youngest drove me to Menards and then helped work on a rental property. I'm no expert here. Sure seems like ANY time spent with your kids is a win. Keep up the good work Daddy.

Check #2:

Warner and I had a little action today, but unfortunately it was the wrong flavor. Caught a coon by the rear leg in set number 5. Of course he made a mess of my set, but I decided to take advantage of all the new scent and visual attraction, and made a new set just on edge of the catch circle.

For any seasoned K9 trappers following along, if you see something in my pictures and think to yourself “don’t do that” or “why’d you do that” or “do this instead,” please share your knowledge with me. Advice is appreciated.

Thanks Joe. Hard to believe it, but he’ll already be 3 years old in June. Having him tag along, asking a thousand questions and getting into everything, is even more enjoyable than I could’ve ever imagined. Kids sure are fun.

Make a file folder in your computer of the little man. When you see one like this, out a copy in there. When the kids are graduating it is SOOOO much easier to sort thru pics. I do the same for dogs, parents, etc. When Dad passed I went thru a bazillion pics and Made a "Dad folder". Made folders for each kid at the same time. Crap ton of work. Would have been easier if I started when they were little.

FWIW- that pic of Warner is awesome! Love it!

Check #3:

Empty traps and 2 more deer that got away lol. Amazingly, I even watched a deer running down the dike ahead of us step right on one of my traps, and watched him kick out of it to run away. Unbelievable. The first one today I remade into somewhat of a “step down” dirt hole set, based on a YouTube video I watched yesterday. I also took advantage of an exposed root and made a larger hole to try to yield more of a visual attraction to the set.

Youll spend so much time carefully and meticulously making the perfect set, and have torn to shreds next day with an opossum grinning at you next morn. I loved it when I did it many years ago. How awesome it would be now with one of my boys. Quality time rite there. It can take same time for all scent to wear off enough. The dirt hole set is a very effective set. If you got any creaks or streams on your land, set some water line traps for mink. That and muskrat were fun to go after too. Trapping Is a game of outsmarting .And anticipation.

Nada.

It was however the first day that I didn’t have to remake a set. That was kinda nice. lol

So I added added two more traps at an intersection in the main trail at the south end. Nice little spot I think. I put in a flat set and a dirt hole set, about 15 feet apart. Oh, and I did something different with these too... I used some plastic sandwich bags as pan covers and covered them with peat moss. The cold temps have me thinking my others sets might freeze in. Hopefully that snow had them moving last night!

My BIL showed me the stepdown variation and I liked it as a bit variance to the flat and dirt hole sets I learned first. I should run some trap behind our house for the excitement. I'll never forget my first coyote and having K there with me only made it that much better!

The video I watched showing the step down variant was really good. I have one true step down set, and the rest are standard dirt holes, but I will say the trap bed is a bit lower generally than the surrounding ground... so they’re like semi-step downs. Lol. I’m currently relying pretty heavily on videos because I really have no clue what I’m doing. . I just figure as long as I don’t contaminate my traps with lure I should be in okay shape.

Have you thought about running a cam on video mode over one or more of your sets? I think the cool factor alone would be worth it. But you could possibly learn a lot from it.

I have thought about trying it. Wish I would’ve had one at this set last night. Not sure what got out of this trap but I’m thinking it was a deer. Mainly because I couldn’t find any coyote tracks nearby, but plenty of deer tracks. These deer are really becoming a nuisance! Oh well. I went around to all my sets and scraped frozen snow off the tops. We had freezing rain after the snow which made it almost impossible for my traps to fire under a target animal’s weight.

Thanks for getting your son involved in the outdoors. My son started tagging along with me when he was 2 and is now making his own sets at the age of 6. I am by no means a pro at coyote trapping but I there are a few things that I see right off the bat that I would change. First off, I would blend your sets in a lot more. Add little pieces of grass/weeds/bean chaff to your dirt to make your set look more natural. Second, check your sets from a distance using binocs to keep the area free of human scent. I don’t want to hijack your thread so I will start a new one to hopefully give you a little more insight.
