Keeping mounts clean

What do you guys use to dust your mounts and such?

I’ve used damp cloths as well as a feather duster. I’ve also used a hide conditioning stuff on a Buffalo I have at dads.

I’ve got some high school kids coming to do homecoming pics in front of a couple of my mounts today and it made me think of it. Made me wonder what everyone else does. I’m half tempted to run the shop vac on them.

For the antlers use WD-40, a tip that my taxidermist told me...
Interesting.

I would think the tacky film it leaves would help collect dust. Unless this is a weekly process to keep the glossy look. Maybe? Got any pics or anything for me to go off? I guess I could spray a rag and go after a dead head or something I’m not attached to.

Ya that's a big no on putting oils on antlers. An indoor mount kept out of the sun will never need something like that. And that's something the old timers did, they also stained the antlers back then as well which is a pretty big NoNo today. Giles is right, that's just going to attract more dust and debris making your mounts dirty quicker. Leave em dry and just dust em when needed. Unless you want your mount to look unnatural, dont use oils or stains. If you want your mount to have an unnatural look to it, sure. Paint it up.

Ive shop vacked them if theyre real dirty, but the ones in my basement only ever get like that. Honestly just running a comb thru the hide takes out most of the dust you cant really see on the deer in your living space, i use damp cloths to clean the antlers and eyes.

For WD-40 it leaves no residue and only once a year. Spray it on a rag and wipe down.

I have to disagree. If you think WD 40 doesn't leave a residue, take a look under the ventilated rib on any guns you have had for a while if you use WD 40. I stopped using it even for guns years ago because of this issue. My taxi said a damp cloth or feather type duster only.
