Today was different at lunch –
I have been going to different stores/grocery stores/Sams at lunch pretty much every day for the past 3 weeks.
Sometimes buying things, sometimes not, always observing.
When the first reports of panic buying came out I wasn’t seeing it. But at first masks were out of stock, then sanitizer, then TP started moving.
Was still seeing plenty of water and food.
But today was different – I went to Sam’s to get gas, and was surprised that the store lot was very full, more cars than I’d ever seen before, even on a Saturday.
Didn’t need anything, but went in anyway. Lady at the door was announcing list of items they were out of – TP, papertowels, sanitizer, Clorox wipes, rice, etc. Fuckin’ trippy.
But there is still plenty of food available.
So I stopped at DrugMart to pick something up on the way back to the office – and there were multiple people there in line with toilet paper.

The vibe is definitely changing. I was planning on waiting until the weekend to fill up on some milk/bread/eggs, but gonna do that tonite instead now.

Wife works in a nursing home – today she was told to pack a bag and keep in the car – if she’s there when any of the residents get diagnosed, they drop the quarantine hammer and she’ll be there for a couple of weeks.

And from talking to others, I get a sense that "preparedness" is finally gaining some respect, and some converts.
But there are still people who aren't taking it seriously.

Reminds me of the old fable of the ant and the grasshopper. It also goes to show you how idiotic people are, I mean i have a large pack of TP in my stock but I in no way hoarded it. Shit tickets are really low on the list. If they run out of it then start cutting up old clothes or just hop in the shower and wash your ass. Cold medicine, bleach, non-perishable food, personal isolation items. These are all things that actually matter.

I hope that your wife doesn't have to quarantine at the facility. That would really suck to be away from her for such a prolonged period of time. Makes logistics of supplying items for her very difficult also.

Further hindering public health efforts, the concept of American exceptionalism has morphed into a societal arrogance that somehow the immune systems of Americans are stronger than those of the Chinese. And even though other countries have enacted very strict quarantine practices, including martial law and a shutdown of schools, there is a misleading perception that the U.S. would have less community transmission because of a better health care system and better hygiene. Another barrier has been the exaggerated notion that COVID-19 is only a danger to old people and that young people are entirely resilient.

Much like Dan...Today’s preparation. It took me two stores to find available stock.

For a moment I thought I wrote that then realized I'm not nearly that eloquent. 😅

Our society tends to think nothing with happen to them and everything is overblown. So far it looks like it is tracking right along as was predicted.

The sad thing is all those ignoring the signs and not preparing and doing things to limit their exposure, will the same ones screaming and crying that the government didn’t do anything and now they need help.

We're all just hairless monkeys with as that comedian said some left over monkey shit. In psychology its called heuristics. Our brain is always looking for the shortest possible way to make a decision. In a nano second, we mentally weigh a ton of factors and make an initial first impression. For the masses of people buying toilet paper, it's a number of things. We still look at others in the herd for signs of danger, when they react we react also in a similar manner. Add in the threat of scarcity and it becomes a bigger issue. That's why the ad says "while supplies last" makes people think they better hurry up and buy it.

I recently took a psychology of leadership course at Cornell that spoke about how the mind works and how we can influence others to lead them. There was a study done where they took a panel of people and put them behind a long table. Everyone but 1 person was in on the study. The guy at the front of the room asked a very simple question. What color is this paper? It was blue. He started on the left and went down the table having everyone say their answers out loud. Every one of them said purple, as he got to the last person who in no way was in on it 80% of the time that person said purple too. Social influence at it's finest.

In another instance, they invited someone into a waiting room where another person was already waiting. This person was reading a book and was in on it. As they both sat there they started pumping smoke out of the vents, the person with the book looked at it and kept on reading without saying a word. 60% of the time the person who wasn't in on it continued to sit there too.

Just a bunch of leftover monkey shit.
