My home patches this year. Nothing at camp this year. This year’s focus is the “Jubilee” tomato. Since learning a thing or two in the horticulture business for a couple years my taste buds fell in love with this yellow tomato and butter leaf lettuce. I’m growing the lettuce indoors this year...trying to grow year round.
The planting of sweetcorn at home on Thurs. 5/14 officially has 70% emergence (63/90). Got it and the rest of the new portion cultivated. Will side dress and plant the remaining 60 seeds in the next few days. Need to get over to the property and do the same. One good meal of corn from this plot and I'll consider it a success. Lots of time to go. Next up for this is to put in some poles beans and transplant some watermelons.
Got 7 large tomato size plants into the above ground box. These seedlings are showing 3rd leaf set so I'm hoping this forecast holds out and they make it. They hardened well over the last week and I buried sideways/deep to help with root development. Box Car Willie's and Celebrations
That last spot will be filled by one of the staggered planted seedlings of Celebration.
Also from the first set of seeds are the peppers, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes still hanging out under lights and getting special daylight sun care to grow and harden currently. They just haven't gotten to a size Im comfy with putting into the ground yet. All have been transplanted from the smaller seedling trays and have responded well over the last week. Hoping to put into the ground in next 1-2 weeks.
When they were transplanted, I started my second/staggered set of seeds of peppers and tomatoes in the smaller pots to take it till frost this year. Not sure if we'll be in current house come harvest (hopefully not), so the open/larger plot at the property will likely get these. Also included the boys sunflower seeds from school.

I gotta get serious about indoor starts next year. I'm in a pinch again this year because of not being more prepared, cucumbers particularly.
I’m pretty sure my wife enjoys the starting process way more than the actual garden.
Its been fun, and a learning curve for just dipping my toes into it. Got another 2 cherry tomatoes on life support, don't think they'll make it. Not sure if its too much water or to little, I need more time with this potting mix. I've been surprised at how wet the lower soil has been when transplanting so I think they are damping off. So far across the board of everything, its around 75-80% survival rate. The peppers need to find their way into the ground in the next 1-2 weeks, they're really taking off with this heat.
The official emegence of the sweetcorn planted 5/3 on the property is 73.5% (103/140). This is wide open with plenty of sun but is very sandy. Will side dress in another week closer to some rain. Think I'm just gonna do the 16-16-16 I have and try to track down some higher nitrogen for another round in 2-3 weeks. I'll plant some pole beans around the outside stalks this next week and then transplant the watermelon when fertilizing. Hopefully the corn is far enough ahead of the beans and will be stout enough.
Gotta get some 1x's to put together some a-frames for a bean trellis section and more stakes for the future tomatoes and peppers. The last section of this plot is reserved for pumpkins in July.
To keep this sweetcorn type going, got in another 3.5 rows/ 118 sweetcorn seeds and will repeat on the beans and water melon on this side of the plot in a few weeks.
Back home the 7 large tomatoes transplanted into the box are taking hold and starting to take off.
2 days ago I got it cleaned up and put in the remaining sweetcorn in on 5 rows/85 seeds. This was a good picture to show how they just won't get the sun they need I fear.

Got all the potatoes mounded last night plus a couple rows of beans planted, 50ish tomato plants in, a row of ocra and some peppers.

I did buy starts, they're at my garden at the house. Some took a hit from the freeze we had a few weeks ago. Those are from seed. First time starting seeds for me. Some are so small you can't hardly see them. We'll see how they do. Lol

In a week my big garden might need mowed in between the rows. I hand weeded my 5 raised beds today.

Only corn and carrots at the property right now. Need to get over there and side dress the corn, plants beans, watermelons, cucumbers, big and cherry tomatoes, big and mini peppers, and boys sunflowers. This last round of seedlings will round out those plantings by end of the weekend.

Deer aren't touching it yet lol
In true hillbilly fashion, the old swing set will be repurposed into a A-shaped trellis and this section will go as-is, lol. "If women don't find ya handsome, they should atleast find ya handy"

Back to work and seems I have no time to get mine weeded. Hopefully I'll get a few hours to get it done soon.
Overall its landing between 75-80% survival rate for everything after the first 2 stages of planting and transplanting.
The 1st planting of corn at home has taken a hit by varmits, chewing off the tops.
2 of the big tomatoes got scorched after day 2 of being transplanted into the box.
Cherry tomatoes have been the hardest to grow. The 4 remaining are dwarfs lol. Plentty of leaves, just not taking off quite yet. Hoping another week or 2 they will and then I'll get them into the ground at the property. Of all grown, I would not have guessed them to be the most unsuccessful.
After discussing investing $500 into a fence at the property, we are just going to leave it open. We will take whatever critter loss that happens so we can learn what's there and plan accordingly when we figure out its permanent spot.
