Surprised this hasn't been discussed yet. I support the ruling and am seeing some cool endorsements out there like Jocko Willink's company and other respectable brand choosing to sponsor a variety of athletes across all sports and sizes of school. Very cool to see how it's not just big time football players benefiting from be ruling.

I don't like it. Not sure the benefit. Maybe they can pull scholarships from those who are being compensated and offer to the walk ons? I don't know enough about it to make much more assessment. I simply don't like the thought of collegiate athletes turning the college sports into a pro type arena. I'm open minded though and someone on TOO can likely offer better insight.

I wish this country would focus more on teaching financial education at a young age vs. trying to figure out how to get everyone more money....

Although on the surface I liked this for reasons Jesse listed - I cannot help but think of some of the trickle impacts this will have, more specifically to team sports. Coach's will need to put a large emphasis on interplayer relationships and drama, far more than before, or risk moral degradation in the locker room. You already saw this in years past when a QB or WR gets all the attention and the lineman who works his tail off, is all but forgotten.

I believe in the past some of this was able to be overcome as there was a focus on the "team" and doing what is best for the betterment of the "team". When money is involved.....it will only make this obstacle a larger one to overcome. I believe this will further drive the actions of players to feel they need to create a brand, be recognized, be cocky, etc. all for the financial opportunities at an endorsement.

So much time in a person's life to make money and be recognized - I always loved the fact that college sports seemed to be solely focused on the team vs. the player and the drive to win and be recognized was driven by the love of the game.

I hope that continues - sorry if I am being a pessimistic pete haha, I think these types of changes have undefinable reactions, and only time will tell of the issues or non, that do or don't arise.

Does this lead to all college athletes including both men and women ? I’m green to this. I thought college athletes were compensated already with scholarships. I am ok with what has worked for years, then again I’m old school.

Minor leagues, G leagues offer this option of paid to play? Guess maybe I’m a little to old school. Times are quickly passing me by in more ways than just this. My 2cents!

I'm with Jesse on this. Universities selling a kids jersey for tens of millions and they didnt get shit. I think there should be mandatory financial education classes.

I cant wait for Maude, the backup goalie for the womans water polo team demand in court she deserves what the starting QB gets. It'll come. Always liberal judges waiting in the woodwork to make those cases

I could write a book on this since I was one these athletes and performed at a high level. It’s been a long time coming for us, I don’t think it goes far enough, I would like to see transfer rules changed so student athletes don’t lose out on years and we should be able to pick who we want to operate on us when sport related surgery is needed with the school still paying. Also universities should provide us 10 year grace period to complete our majors with it all being covered. The amount of money that was being made off of us is ridiculous, there are so many over paid administrators and academic liaisons who don’t do a god damn thing and make way to much off of backs of these athletes it’s stupid. The second we are finished or used up they don’t give a fuck about us.

I had a job, multiple jobs, in college. Why can’t they? Amateurism is a myth. “Amateur” olympians have endorsements. Let em live…

Not all D 1 college sports are full scholarship, and because of title fuckin 9 ladies have to have as many schollies as men. So all D 1 football schollies are full, and each team has just under 90 scholarships kids, mens basketball all are full schollies, baseball typically has 25 kids on the roster with 12 full scholarships to divide up, wrestling is similar and mens track disappearing at a alot of schools. This why at a lot of d 1 schools there are more girls sports than boys, football eats up alot of scholarships for men. This is also why baseball is so much more competitive at the junior college, d2 and d3 level.

That's great...but if they do that then y'all need to actually score 1350 on the SAT to get in, like all the other poor plebs that aren't good at running and jumping.

Big Picture-What I think a lot of these universities are failing to address is getting football and basketball players meaningful/useful college degrees, its no coincidence that half the football team is majoring in history or criminal justice. The primary goal for the coaches and university should be to help better the lives of these athletes by helping them get degrees in something they can use in the real world. Hell if they would allow students athletes to learn a trade while playing football that would be great. But this is not how it works, practice and training basically takes up about 7 hours of your day, if you are of average intelligence there no way you can take advanced business, math classes, etc. Thats why I say universities should give athletes a grace period after their career is over, would allow us to dedicate ourselves fully to a super hard math class or whatever. Also some guys like myself were bubble NFL, NBA or MLB guys we roamed around playing triple ball or European league or AFL for a couple years then come back to finish. I graduated but wasnt allowed to come back and finish my teacher licensure. Anybody that comes back to finish has to pay out of pocket and a lot of those guys don't make it big.

When 100,000 people start plunking down $100 for a ticket. $30 for parking, $50 for food and drinks, and $50 for souvenirs every Saturday to watch those "poor plebs" take a math test, then your argument may hold water

I had several teammates that were prop 8 meaning they couldnt get a good enough score, that either graduated college or went to the league and made lifechanging money, if we used your suggestion then they would probably be on the streets. Since college sports at the d 1 level is about money and success on the field, why don't we just get rid of scores and concentrate on finding actually careers for these kids while they are playing high level college football. This allows them to be surround by coaches and get them some sort of training or work program while playing for the university.

Personally, I only hope we get EA Sports NCAA Football games again because of this.
2016 I got a $3,000 check from the settlement for EA sports using our likeness. I had several teammates that didnt fill out the paperwork because they thought it was a waste of time. All of basically got treated equally did'nt matter if you were from Ohio State or Ohio U.

Then let me rephrase.. Create a farm league that feeds the NFL and the NBA just like AAA baseball feeds MLB. Get rid of the NCAA entirely.

Thats been discussed with the NBA and basically exists in the MLB with the farm systems they have, in the baseball some guys will go to college to improve their draft status but then blow out their arms, which is very common for pitchers (I had 2 summer league teammate that did this). If you go to a actual college I believe they can not leave for the draft until after 2 years, whereas in junior college they can go anytime (please correct me if I am wrong Cotty or anyone else).

The problem is that majority of NFL players are only in the league for 2 or 3 years and are not making enough life changing money to depend on for their rest of their lives. I believe the NBA career is a little longer and a little more lucrative, but still probably not enough to live the rest of your life on. We get so caught up in the abilities and the money that the few hall of famers make that we forget that the rest of the role players in NFL, NBA and MLB go on to live fairly similar lives to of us and have to get real world jobs. IF they saved their money and invest well they live like a medical dr. and others barely scrape by.

So if I am hearing this right. . . .Big Country just drank some beers and found this thread. Hey Jon, while you were worked up over this I just stole your quad again. 🤣🤣🤣

On a serious note, thanks for some enlightenment. You covered a lot of ground there. Trying to digest it all and find my opinion on this one. I'm still leaning towards the end outcome being negative for the fans. (Also admit this is a selfish outlook with no regard for the kids.) But it also sounds like there should be a compromise which puts money towards the futures for these athletes. I hadn't given a lot of thought to the guy on the bubble or who is a practice squad player or maybe 1-2 year NFL player. Maybe some of these monies go to programs like Jon mentioned? That is something I can get behind.

Women's soccer gets funded and scholarships for much of the team also. I sat thru some college prep soccer stuff with my boy when he was 8-9th grade. Sounded like football ate male scholarships and most soccer players were shafted, but with equal scholarship numbers for me and women it really benefits women soccer and volleyball. Little screwy there with how they dish those out too. Truthfully a better shot at soccer at the next level than football for as few scholarships as they hand out. But I digress as it doesn't pertain to the subject as much as football/basketball.
