I know for many hunters, September ushers in the first wave of open seasons. Usually this is for doves. Some on here may remember that this year I was coerced into trying whole plucked dove. With varying levels of success and failure, I decided that its a viable option. But...generally isn't worth the time and effort.

Nevertheless...I found myself with 30 plucked doves. After much experimentation I ended up freezing 17 of them for later use.

Well...with the GF out of town for two weeks, what better time to revisit my doves.

First thing I did was to cut the legs and wings off of the whole bird and breast out the rest. I was never able to find a recipe that would cook everything at the same time.

I ended up breading and frying the legs and wings. They were tasty. But not worth the effort.

Since the GF returns from vacation tomorrow evening, it became more urgent to finish processing the doves, lest I have to endure much questioning and gnashing of teeth over their presence in the sacred refrigerator.

I’m just starting to get into the different types of bourbon and I have to say that Woodford is one of my favorites. Dove poppers look amazing but unfortunately doves are classified as a songbird here in Jersey…but I’d be lying if I said I never tried them before.😂

Take the training wheels off, George. There’s lots of good bourbons out there, don’t limit yourself 🥃👍🏼😂

Woodford is very easy to drink. It mixes well and it goes down easy.

If you like the smoother, less peppery or burning bourbons, go for the wheated mashbills. Things like larceny and makers mark and weller. If you like things less smooth and more fiery, go for the ryes...and the bulleits.
