We made our own owl hooters out of pvc when I was first getting started back in the 80s. I forgot mine one time and tried my voice. It was way better and a lot louder. I could get birds to gobble when others couldn’t with their hooters. I’ve called in lots of owls too. At some point I damaged my vocal chords and can’t consistently nail it so I’m currently in the market for an artificial hooter too.

Me TOO, and just like with all calls, they have their place. I feel that TOO many guys walk around owl hooting etc. I typically just let the crows get the birds going for me and then formulate a plan.
You are never going to call in a turkey with an owl hooter. Or crow call, etc. Just a quick locator and put it away.

Anyone ever use a goose call? I used to hunt an area that had a lot of geese on nearby water. Birds will often shock at them. I carried a goose call for a few years but have left it on the waterfowl lanyard the last couple.

I rarely use a locator anymore. If birds are gonna gobble, they usually don’t need me.

Outside looking in thought...

Why not use a gobble?

Seems like an unnatural peacock would have them want to go the other way. Same with a coyote call. I would think both of those would have them want to avoid that area.

I'd also think that an owl hoot from the ground would be sketchy to them. This locate works both ways. I think I would want to use something to challenge them or peak interest.

Problem with gobbling, is that unless you absolutely have the place to yourself, it may bring in another hunter. But it does work at the right time.

Maybe not the next valley, but the idea is to get within 100 yards or so before starting to call.
I understand now. This is a distance locator. You aren't close enough that they can hear you walk. The word "shock" always made me think this happened at a close distance. Like you literally scared the shit out of them dumbass birds. Snuck up and said "BOO!" shocked them. Then you know you are close enough to set up.
