Replace those cables with good welded chain. You will have so much more peace of mind. So very glad you were tied in when it happened!!

Wow! Seems this happens to someone here every year. Why are you guys still using this set up? Or why aren't you replacing the cables?
I have never had to replace a cable, only straps and seats because they were chewed up by squirrels. This is the main reason I take my stands down at the end of season. no good comes from leaving them to the elements and critters unattended for 7 months.
These guys packing in their set seem to be a bit safer. But then again, the fumbling around putting it up and taking it down is a risk. Hmmmm

lucky I didn't die before I had a lineman's belt for hanging stands. THAT was dangerous, but death or serious injury seems like it was much less of a concern when I was 25 than it does at 50 something.

Yep, this coming off season they are all going the way of chain. I can remember taking pressure treated peices of 2x.4's and nailing them in with a arm and leg wrapped around a tree and then building a platform, hunting etc - all without a lifeline, harness or linemans belt - 18 -20 y/o dumbshit human chimpanzee. This was '79-'82 or so.... the risks... so thankful now.
Fellas, after the ash beetle and the amount of ice and wind we've had this year. I've stepped into some areas that I shouldn't have. It's real easy to do while shed hunting. You take a look around and notice a bunch of fresh branches on the ground, look up and find yourself in the fall zone of a widow maker.
I'm not sure what would prevent yourself from doing this. Just know that if you find yourself in an area with a bunch of fresh branches and no tree, you need to look up!

Ton of logs and branches down over the weekend on trails and it's easy to just look at the ground and not look up for your own safety. Good reminder! The snow and wind storms the last month sure put a hurt on anything weak out there.

Our place is a death zone. I don't hike unless the wind is under 8-10 mph. You can't even cut them down at this point because the slightest vibration causes them to break off from the top.

I need to make it a priority to go for a walk looking up. We've had a ton of storms this year and it seems I'm always looking st the ground when I'm walking. Looking for sign and whatnot. I need to look up! I'm not sure if anyone else needs to hear that, but I'm saying it out loud.

Great reminder Dave. I'll probably wait to go out chasing squirrels to check stands. Carry a few extra nuts and bolts and ratchet straps
Just remember to take down the old straps so it doesn't freak out any trespassing hunters in the dark.
