TOO Garden Thread

I’m finally done with my raised beds build, planting and perimeter fence erection. I rigged up a sprinkler similar to what George has going on.

Additionally I also planted and built a 10’ plus elevated fence around each of the 10 fruit trees I bought at Rural King and Home Depot. I have 4 apple(2 Honeycrisp, 1 Johnathan, 1 McIntosh)2 pears(Asian) and 4 peach.
I do have 2 blueberry bushes yet to plant but it feels great to be almost done.

Mine is taking off great. My Tomato plants exploded while I was up there for turkey hunting and paint Creek so I had to put some of the cages upside down. I swear the beans are growing a foot a night. So far I have a cayane pepper bush, two okra plants, 6 better boys, one cherry, 4 green bean, and 2 pink eye purple hull plants and another mound for pickling cucumbers.

Another 22 pepper plants and 15 tomatoes. 2 yellow squash, 3 cucumber mounds, 30' row of half runners and a 90' row of blue lakes. Still have some Italian flat beans to get in. Almost done.

Good jump on things given the weather, supposed to hit 47 though Tuesday night so no maters or peppers yet, but got the following in:

18 brocolli
5 rows x 40'L sweetcorn
2 types of cucumbers
2 types of bush beans
2 types of pole beans
2 types of carrots
2 types of sunflowers scattered thru the planted area

Fingers crossed the weather continues to not dump 2"+ each storm and the rest of the area being worked can be covered in watermelons and pumpkins.

Looking good guys. Heck of a spread.

I trimmed up the tomatoes today to get the lower branches off the ground. With the humidity here plants need the ability to get air under and around them.

They started to develop some blight so I put down a thin coat of powdered lime and watered it in. Sprayed with a fungicide also. Hopefully that takes care of it. Apparently bagged "garden soil" is just fine ground mulch with some fertilizer in it. .

Yellow squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, peas, lima beans, pole beans, and two different kinds of pickling cucumbers all made it in the ground today. Still have more cucumbers, bush beans, two varieties of corn, red and yellow onions, along with several varieties of peppers and maters to go in as time permits. Should be fully planted by the weekend.

0.3" of rain this AM, perfect little quencher with the sun out now. Forecast is now showing a couple of days below 50* at night thru the weekend, screw it, tomatoes & peppers are going in this week. I'm tired of the daily care.

My maters have exploded to where I needed to sucker and tie them up.

Question, who here suckers their maters? I know some you do and some who don’t. When I worked on a few produce farms back in my youth both farmers did. One had 9K and other had 13K, just me and 3-4 other boys. Our hands were blackish green and the hardened vine juice was prolly 1/16” thick on our hands to where it was hard to make a fist. Long days in the fields no matter the weather, while unless a twister was on the ground nearby. Lmao

I do on indeterminate types, not determinates unless its in the way/on the ground/or in middle and more air is needed. I trim both to 10-12" from ground so nothing is touching.

I'm fairly diligent with my suckering. Helps with seeing ripe fruit if nothing else.

I wait until the plant gets about head high then I top them and start pulling suckers.

We got a nice gentle soaking .4" through out yesterday, so I put in the bell peppers this AM which rounds out 80% of the planting. Sweet corn will continue to be staggered over the next few month, watermelons and pumpkins are prolly 2-3wks out before transplanting if that end of the garden isn't under water.

First couple cherry tomatoes to be picked this weekend, and the regular maters and bell peppers beginning to flower.
