Turkey on private ground around here is a whole different animal. They are a few pockets of them on private and it's a very competitive situation. I don't even bother anymore.

Squirrel hunting is a good way too get their feet wet, it’ll teach them some woodsman skills as well. Sitting still , looking for sign and also finding deer and Turkey sign. Great way too early season scout.

Deer on public lands in some areas is not the best alternative. I hunt Berlin Reservoir and W. Branch and during gun season its like the pumpkin army has invaded the woods. Additionally Bubba is out there with his 12 pack. I have found so many places where someone is stand hunting and their empty beer cans litter the ground. East of ADA is a public hunting grounds on St Rt 42.
