So, I've got this guy standing around outside the blind . Eating grass & raking small trees....

First official day of rutcation and I’m in for my first morning hunt of the season. I’ve got a great wind so I may just stick it out all day. Movement has been pretty good so far. I’ve seen 9 does/fawns and 2 bucks. One buck, a 2 yr old 10 pointer, was really dogging the first group of does. I’ve got a buck decoy sitting in front of me at 10 yards. Fingers crossed. Good luck today everyone.

Back to reality. Sigh......

Saw a forky harassing a doe around 8:15 then I heard a bunch of commotion from the same direction 15 minutes later. I could hear a buck working a scrape and it sounded legit, so I hit the grunt tube a couple times and he responded by thrashing the licking branch. He walked closer, found another scrape and worked it hard. Then he dropped off the shelf and hit the scrape in the bottom that's 45 yards from the stand and thrashed it. He stopped at 30 to access the situation and I could tell he was mature, perhaps "over the hill" antler wise. Great beams and mass, but no tine length. Just a beer belly and a grey face. I sat the bow down and just watched him do his thing. Once he realized he couldn't see what he heard, he slow stepped it backwards to get some cover again, then slowly walked back up to the shelf he came from. Great encounter, just not what I'm looking to shoot this year. Solid morning sit overall.

Sorry to hear the weather is gonna be warm as shit for you guys taking vacation. I think I would save the next 2 days and go to work.
My plan is to do some catching up on my bathroom remodel the next couple days and just hunt the evenings. Temps don’t bother me quite as much these days. Deer are gonna do their thing regardless. It’s the high winds that irritate me more than anything.

Left the house this morning expecting only to hunt the morning, then managed to rearrange a few things to get out tonight. Pulled in to the barn at the farm and realized I didn't have any warm weather gear or a climbing harness, so I had to rethink my strategy. Rode/walked in with nothing more than boots and my Jockeys on 😂 This blind is right under my S wind set on this ridge, so it's in a good spot despite being well past it's prime as a blind. There used to be a licking branch and scrape at 20 yards dead head, but the branch broke and yet, the scrape is clean, so they're still using it. I have 2 other scrapes to my left and right, lots of acorns and at least 1 shooter that's been on cam here in the last week. If it works, it'll make for a better story!

Decent buck and 3 does in the final minute of shooting light. He pushed a single doe out of a thicket to the east of me 100 yards right as I stepped out of the blind. The other 2 does followed them down the hill. It was too dark to tell how big he was, but he had enough up top that I could tell through the darkness he was solid. His grunts sounded the part, too. This heat wave will hold down the daylight activity, but Friday is fixing to get good.

Sitting up against a big fallen down oak tree. Heard some nose behind me see a dunk about 7 yards behind me , turn back around about 10 minutes later hear some more noise the dunk had been walking back and forth behind me.

See a shooter running straight towards me it stops when it sees the dink 20 yards behind me to my left needed to go about 10 more yards for me to have a shot stopped stood there. And then comes another buck it stops beside the other one . Shooting range . Just wasn’t on the right side of the log.

I could have shot one of them the smaller of 2 nice 8 point just a little spindley.

The biggest one which I would have shot sensed something was wrong and just walked off back the way it came.

Wish I would have had my kid with me. Because he woulda been on the right side of the log.🤣

Just another one of them days in the woods I should have done something just a little bit different . Lmao 🤦‍♂️

Luck has not been on my side lately. I fell about a week ago and really wrenched my ankle. Wasn’t sure how long it would be before I would be able to hunt again. Walking even with my walking stick was painful, no broken bones at least. My hunting buddy knew how much I wanted to hunt and came up with a plan. He moved the fence that hides my tractor from 25 yards away to within feet of my stand. I used this setup Sunday and Monday with no ill effects. I was able to get back in the game. My stand faces west and all deer approach from the north or southwest. My camera card tells me the deer didn’t seem to mind the change he made for me. So l’m back in the hunt. Here is a view from the south and another from the west. Tractor is well hidden from any deer that passes through my shooting zone.

Adapt and overcome! Nice having a buddy who’d do that for you.
