    Interesting logic

It’s all relative to your location around the state. Northern, open farm country deer are generally pretty large. Southern deer are typically noticeably smaller. It’s been this way for at least the 30 years I’ve been hunting. Varying deer densities, varying diets, genetics, and Bergman’s...

    Gun Safes - Any recommendations?

Another vote for Liberty. Mine is a cabelas branded model. 48-gun. Pretty nice safe for the money. My advice… buy the biggest one you can bring yourself to spend the money on.

    Interesting logic

So this is pretty interesting. What really IS the metric for ranking where we're at with deer hunting quality? Is it the number of 170+ inch book entries, or is it the number of 140+ inch book entries? If it's 170+, then why? And if that relative number is declining, say compared to 10-20...

    Big dumb deer

    Congrats Jon. Great deer!

    Labor rates and wages?

“Normal” prices for work have been long gone since Covid. I don’t mean to sound abrasive… but, running a business doesn’t have anything to do with being moral and fair. Figure out what your overhead and costs are. Figure out what your competitors are quoting. And figure out what your...

    Interesting logic

I’m confused. Is there a question? My interpretation is that Rex is saying Ohio is one of the best states for deer hunting, regardless of what others point to as “faults” in our current regulations. And I would completely agree with him.

    The Butchering Thread

Also… if you or someone in your family has one of these rare gems, snatch it up. It is the best thing ever for braising big cuts of meat and bone.

    The Butchering Thread

I’ve been saving all my deer shoulders while for the past couple of years. Most of them never make it to the freezer. I’ve done it the way you shared above, but honestly I think the first 3 hrs on the smoker are a waste of effort. Once you braise it for 3-4 hrs you pretty much lose any smoke...

    Tankless water heaters?

Yep, exactly this. ^^^ It’s pretty easy to do. I’ve done it myself a couple of times. But anymore, I just ask my HVAC guy to add it to the list when he’s servicing my furnace system.

    Trapping?

Some of the old school muskrat trappers love those Victor long spring 1.5’s. Other than that it’s kind of hard to tell what’s there based on the pics. I know most serious trappers are pretty picky about what traps they run. A mixed lot like that would definitely be good for some new...

    Tankless water heaters?

I own two Rinnai R53 tankless water heaters… one in the house, one in my shop. Both have been in service since 2006. Knock on wood… I’ve not had a lick of trouble with them. Honestly, I think they’re great. Mine do run on propane though, not electric.

    Late season public

Late season is one of the best times to hunt public land in my opinion. There’s virtually no other hunters around and the deer eventually return to “normal” patterns and behavior. Like anywhere else in the late season, the deer don’t usually move very far between bedding and feeding areas. So...

    White Hurricane, January 25–27, 1978.

I wasn’t alive yet but I’ve heard all about it more times than I can count lol. The most impactful story was the fact that my mom’s uncle Art was killed by the storm. He ventured out on a snowmobile to go help someone else in need and never made it. The cold and the snow took his life...

    Trap line gun

Ruger Wrangler revolver in .22 caliber. Single action, no frills, but it’s super cheap and reliable. Get a holster and you’re in business. That’s what I use on the trap line and it works great.
