From Long Ago experience, a hard cast lead bullet will have little to no expansion on a white tail. You will typically get good penetration but you'll get about the same size entry and exit wounds. If you're going with a non-hollow point cast bullet, I'd suggest a Flat Nose - or a Wide Flat...

My Daily Carry, where allowed is a Leatherman Supertool in a belt holster. Sometimes a Opinel #10 or Cold Steel Ranch Hand in my pocket. I've dressed out deer with both the Opinel #10 and the Cold Steel Ranch Hand. Both do a good job, but then I've got to clean all the gunk out....

I think the cartridge will stick around now. There are a few choices now for reloading components, so it's no longer a factory ammo only proposition.

I'm tagged out in my home county, so I have to travel a bit if I want to hunt during muzzleloader. It's been a long time since I've been to Kokosing WIldlife Area in Knox County near Fredrictown. Has anyone hunted it during the January muzzleloader season?

Buck during bow season, got a Doe with a 45-70 Tuesdy of early gun season. Saturday nailed a button, (tagged out for my county), Sunday got a doe. Both bonus season deer were taken with a 400 legend.
