12 coyotes in a pack...

The one I shot during archery season was with a pack of 4 or 5 others if I remember right from last year! First time I have ever seen more than two. They are getting thick around here that's for sure!

I have some Coyote gitters but if your found with them, I dident give them to you.lol Been outlawed for a few years but they worked. I would say with a pack that big that there are a few dogs running with them. If that is the case, take the dogs out also cuz once they start to run stuff there is no turning back. Maybe you should try to get some of the local farms and people to let you hunt them and we could make a TOO weekend of it sometime.

What part of Allen county r u hunting, my
main spot is by the airport. It was been a few years but I had 12 run under my stand on a evening hunt. My other stand is close to 75 and the land owner has seen quite a few around there also.

There's always been a big population of coyotes around the airport property. However, this area I'm talking about is on the north side of the county...where Bluelick Rd. Ts into Cole St.

I've got permission to hunt the area, I just figure I'll wait until after a get done bowhunting deer and then get after them.

I am the Deputy that heared the approx. 12 coyotes in the area. it may be less or may be more who knows. i was just counting all the different yips , howls while they were sounding off and they sounded as they were in a circle . after about about 1 to 2 mins i heared them running through the woods behind my residence with a more intense and aggressive sound so i took my K-9 inside fearing they were coming out of the woods due to them sounding like they were in the treeline where i could not see. i came back out and the growling and attack happened 1 door down . i could hear them all together and what i assume to be the cry or scream of a doe and then nothing else. BUT Archrtl may be right about dogs being with them who knows . i do not know much about coyotes and recently got into coyote hunting due to having young kids and my K-9. i have hunted the area and while out seen 1 full grown with 2 approx 6 to 8 month old pups and they were coyotes. ive only put eyes on them 3 . but iheared them2 weeks after but further east of the area and whatever they had it was quick . neighbors told me about neighbors further east of the location lossing long time dogs.

Welcome to the site K-9

Many of the guys that hunt coyotes are in the woods for archery season right now. If you don't get an answer right away be patient or start your own thread in the "Other Critters" section of the forum for varmint hunting.
Most everyone here would love to see you thin the pack out.
I'm not going to be much help on this one but wish you luck!

K-9- Welcome to the site. I am local and hunt them, but I am hot on the trail of a couple bucks right now. Coyotes on the back burner unless they come by in bow range. I use a Foxpro electronic caller or hand calls.

K-9,
Welcome to TOO!

If you're refering to the neighbors' dog loss to be the Santaguida family's chocolate labs, they recovered the female. The City of Lima reported picking up a male chocolate lab, found hit by a car. I work with the dog owner and it was a tough loss for him and his family. (I work at the treatment plant at the end of the lane.)

Snaring has the highest success rate of killing coyotes. After that is driving/pushing with as many hunters as you can get. The third, least successful, but most fun is calling them. Even so, if you use an electronic caller and a motion decoy, the odds are stacked in your favor. Coyotes are NOT to be underestimated for cunning! Their sense of smell, eye sight and hearing are far more advanced than the smartest whitetail. Plus, they remember/learn from mistakes that we hunters make, much like our pet dogs. If you're calling them, play the wind, use their senses against them and have your weaponry at the ready. Centrefire weapons are the way to go, as coyotes are tough customers and can take a silly amount of abuse.
This one took 4 rounds of .223 and still made it 60 yards to the woods where I found him.

There's some good reading to be found on www.predatormastersforums.com , no matter what your method of killing coyotes.

Good luck!

This thread made me think about that article about the coyote/wolf mixbreed that is supposedly flourishing and growing in population.
If yotes don't normally "pack", we know that wolves do....:smiley_chinrub:
can't remember where that link is, sorry

Here is my theory on that.

Most coyote DON'T pack up however, with plenty of food available and with the coyote intelligence and adaptability I believe we are seeing an evolution happening. They have learned by pack hunting they can take out bigger prey and eat more often resulting in better overall health. The coyote is very smart and can figure things out pretty quick especially when it's an advantage to them.

K-9, If you go to the OSTAs web page, you can find a list of people up by Lima that will be more then glad to help you get rid of them. If you cant get on the forum there , IM me back and I will send you a few numbers to call and get some help. www.ohiostatetrapper.org

Dannmann801,
Here's a couple links to a coyote/wolf killing, in N.W. Ohio. Could this be what you had in mind?
