Its a nod to those 19th century black face minstrel shows. he uses the character mostly when he does rendeitions of death songs. I have been following clifton hicks for over a decade. The only reason i can think of why he isnt more well known is because he doesnt want to be. He just seems happy doing his youtube thing.
His videos on the history of appalacian music and the banjo are very interesting.
