2012-2013 Rabbit season

Might need to check out Hank's collar. Could be too big on her but I do have a collar already. My bigger fear would be her taking off, getting hit by car, etc. I mean, she is Graci's pet first.

Take her to the woods. Most of them have it in their blood. You can't really teach them anything but manners imo.

With my first dog pound beagle, I spent a good month on a long check cord teaching her commands with the e.collar on but not using it. After that I introduced the use of the e.collar. Whenever we went for leash walks, I had her wear the e.collar but didn't turn it on. She really started to associate me putting on the collar with going outside to have fun. After that I turned her loose and we went and found rabbits for her to run. The second dog pound beagle was easier because I found out she came from a beagle kennel so I knew she had been a rabbit dog before. I still did some refresher on lead training before I turned her loose.

I haven't been carrying a gun very much at all lately, but with the spinach eating incident in our high tunnel, I figured I had better shoot some rabbits before the end of the season. So I went out Saturday and shot one and Sunday and shot two. I haven't had a chance to write up yesterday's hunt in my blog, but Saturday's hunt is written. If any of you like to read about other people's rabbit hunts as much as I do, I have 8 separate blog post from the 2012-2013 season devoted to rabbit hunting.

Here's a the link to Saturday's rabbit hunt

And a couple pictures from yesterday:

Finally wrote up last Sunday's hunt in my blog. This was one of the most memorable hunts of the season because I shot two rabbits. Both were toward the end of the hunt as I was hunting my way back to the house. And both rabbits were shot after the dogs made big runs that took them out of hearing range for a bit. And while they were in two separate locations on the farm, both rabbits ran down a narrow fence line strip to cross from one woodlot into the next woodlot and then circled their way back running along the same narrow fence line and giving me great places to set up and wait.

I carried a gun again today because I wanted to try and shoot another spinach/radish loving rabbit that lives by the high tunnel. Well the dogs and I didn't find any rabbits out and about there. I still wanted to get the beagles some exercise so we headed to the back part of the farm. They had one nice complete circling rabbit that ended with the rabbit going in a hole. We moved on. The next rabbit I helped the dogs to get it started. I almost stepped on it as it took off from its hiding spot under a downed tree limb. It made a really nice circle and was almost back to the starting place (where I was standing) when it decided to travel down a fence line to the next woodlot. It took the dogs far away. Far enough that I could not hear them for a short time. It made a smaller circle on its way back, but eventually it traveled back up the fence line toward where the chase had all started and where I was waiting. When it passed by me it was running, but then came to a stop 20 yards away. The rabbit was well out in front of the dogs. All I could see was the rabbit's head and its body was behind a tree. After the hounds did such a fine job on the chase, I really could not pass up that shot. As usual, my 3 year old male was first on the scene. Probably the last rabbit of the season for me.

Well done Bluedog. Another enjoyable hunt I was able to feel like I was part of from work.
Thanks for the story!
