Well, here's the tale...
I haven't got to hunt much this season so far, not as much as I like at least. I've been traveling for work and got sick so it kinda sucked until today.
I got permission to a new property in Medina County this year and with my limited time I was unable to scout it out, set cameras and such. I hunted one time before tonight and saw 2 does. Decided that I needed to move my stand as I though the deer were moving a different way than I first thought. I got there today at noon to move the stand quickly and I saw a beautiful big buck about 90 yards away... I went back to my truck and thought I might be able to slip in on him, but figured it was a long shot at best. Well, he left and I was sure by his body language that he was near a bedded doe. There was also a small fork buck about 60 yards from him, so I figured he was also protecting his woman!
Anyways, I got out there tonight at 3:45 and was setup ready to hunt. I believe I jumped one on the way in, but never got an eye on it... As 6:00 rolled around, I turned around and 3 does were making their way behind me. They got directly downwind and the big one sniffed around, but never got too freaked out. Must be that Scent Smoker!!
About 12 minutes later, I catch a doe running in the bottoms and thought, "hope there's a buck behind her" Sure enough there was and to my COMPLETE surprise it was the buck I saw earlier today!! I grunted immediately a couple of times and he finally paid attention and made his way to the top. He crested the hill at about 25 - 30 yards. I drew before he got up there, but I had no shot. I waited and ducked down slightly to hopefully get a clear shot, but no. Just then that doe he was after popped up sort of to my right and he began to move. He came across my stand at 5 freaking yards! He stopped briefly and I let her fly. Heard it smack hard and he left out a moan. He took off like a bat out of hell. Since he was so close, I could see the massive blood trail already. I got down after 15 minutes to check for my arrow, nicely stuck in the ground with a healthy blood trail right after it. I slipped out of the woods to my truck, thinned my clothes down and slowly came back in. Tracked the blood for around 150 yards, through the woods, down a steep hill and across a small creek. There he laid with a nice bunch of bloody bubbles coming out. What a relief.
Got him home, gutted him at home. He weighed 230 pounds and I double lunged him. He's a mainframe 8 but his left side has 10 scoreable points. Great mass!!
I will have to measure him up in the morning and then off to the taxidermist!
Having computer issues... I will post pics from phone after this reply. Forgot to score it so I will go to the taxidermist and measure him up for the team!
Also, Congrats Chad for the kids! That is SWEET!! What a memory for all of you, looked like a very good time!
