2013/2014 hunting with the hounds.

That sucks too hear that..... Never a good thing but is always a chance taken when you enter the woods.... I've always worried one of the girls would get caught up in a snare but have been fortunate on that at least....

Yea I set a lot of snares around old buildings and barns and it makes me nervous. I only set for coon and around buildings in hopes that a hound don't get into them they are deadly on critters but with so many beagles and coondogs and there is getting to be a lot of coyote hounds in my area it scares the hell out of me to set them out in a woods. Most of us in our group carry a set of wire cutters with us just in case one is caught. But thats not saying we would make it too them in time. Like you said you never know.

Always heard most dogs will just relax and wait for the release where as a wild animal isn't used too the leash.... Wonder if it was just running and the momentum of it pulled too tight????

Hoping to make it out with the guys tomorrow, but the work schedule isn't looking good. They ran two fox around today that got away from them . But it sounds like they had fun which is the main thing.

Man sorry to hear about them losing a dog.I do a lot of snaring but only on farms where no dogs are allowed to be.We don't have anyone running coyote dogs in our area but if so and they did as well as you guys I probably wouldnt bother with snares.I have been doing it the last 5yrs and am up to 62 and would like to hit 70 or 80 before I pull them at the end of February.Good luck and keep after them.

Yea it happens but it is sad. We have a lot of hounds around here. Rather it be a beagle or coon hound or a coyote dog. There is plenty. I set snares for coon around barns and they are the cats ass would love to set for yotes but man I hate too for fear of catching some bodies hunting dog. I could care less about somebody's house dog but the hounds are suppose to be in a woods. I set a lot of dirt hole sets and flat sets for the coyotes around here. Im glad your catching the hell out of them good to see guys working on them. Now is the time to get after them because the females are breeding and if you kill one female that's 4 to 10 more coyotes you don't have next year. Keep up the good work I enjoy your post

Didn't make it out again this weekend do to other obligations. But they did kill 2 more yesterday. They ran one Saturday that gave them a slip. And yesterday they had trouble finding tracks because it was still snowing pretty hard . But they did find a few and got after them. Sounded like 2 good chases with 2 dead coyotes. Those two made numbers 21 and 22 for the year.

Enjoyed catching up with your thread Jake! Sounds like a blast. Sorry about the dog but I can see how it could easily happen.

Thanks I'm finally getting to make it out tomorrow first time in a few weeks the boys killed number23 last Monday. Three of the guys are retired and they spotted one and killed it. My azz has lived in a plow truck the month and its killing me not to be able to hunt. But I will be out tomorrow.

You aren't a kidding there. Been a few mornings and evenings where the thought of trying some calling has been there. The reality of doing it is another story. With the hours we have been putting in, the reality of seeing the kids and getting some sleep supercede hunting some coyotes. Good luck tomorrow Jake.

Yea probably won't make it out tomorrow. My daughter has a ball game. And I might just lay around after that. We did kill one today pot licker went about seven sections before we got him down. Let me tell ya that snow is deep. Calling would be good right now but I have lack of ambition too lol good luck if you get out.

Might be the first chance to sleep in I have had in awhile. Just finished some paperwork, tax stuff, and balancing the checkbook. It is after 1am already. Filled the boiler, fed the dog, came back in the house. Getting up by 6am doesn't sound inviting. Ball game mid afternoon for my son. With a little bit of luck, I might make it out in the evening. Highly doubtful. The wife will want to do some family activities or a date night since we haven't seen each other much lately and she worked the last two days. I am not complaining. I would like to hit it tomorrow. I just don't think it is reality. Calling some is low on the priority list right now.

One more yesterday made 25 for the year. None today. And man the snow is getting deep. Its making for some rough walking. And even harder on the dogs we need a good warm spell. But I bet we will keep after them.

We got about another 6" today and it's not going good for the ladies.... Too deep for the short legged version up here..... I'm thinking it's about 18' on the ground now and that layer of ice will hold for about a few steps and then breaking thru and start all over again..... Not cool lol.....

How much y'all got on the ground out there?

About the same here!!! Would love to have a pair of snow shoes to play around with. Would be fun to walk the BIG drifts along the railroad tracks!!!

Always look at em but just don't usually have the snowfall for them and when we do the beagles stay in the box lol....

We have about the same amount but no ice underneath. The drifts on the edges of the woods are about 3 to 4 ft deep. I've been kicking around the snow shoes myself. I work for odot and I've been in a plow truck 36 out of the last 38 days. My ass don't care if I see another snow flake the rest of the year lol. Its great to find tracks and find the yote but 18 inches is excessive.

The bad part about beagles is the bunnies run on top and they have too trudge thru it lol.... They definitely have the edge lol....
