Put me down as a mark in the dark column. I hunt for meat, I enjoy hunting bucks, but I hunt meat in the form of deer steaks, deer grind, summer sausage and deer sticks. If I could have tagged a 3rd, I would have. My tax dollars pay for the ODNR to do their job. I have no problem telling you if that's the limit, that's what I am shooting for. I pay a premium price for the meat by pound compared to beef, but all 2-3 deer get eatin by our family of 5 every year. If a 50lb avg. per deer, that 150lb is a drop in the bucket.

I think the ODNR has made the right changes over the years. Will we go back to the prime of 06/07, prolly not but it's a lot better than it was prior.

I just dont get it from a Hancock County perspective. There are three huge sections of former/current Boy Scouts properties that hold herds in the hundreds on each. And they aren't hunted. The rest of the county is very hit and miss.
How many deer collisions happen around those “3 huge” properties?

Glad to see a few of you guys around my area of Hancock and wood counties. Thought I was the only one around here. Deer hunting in general is very hit and miss in this part of Ohio for sure. Sometime I want to check out S and SE Ohio where the real action is. Very hard to find places to hunt up here IMO.

Funny you say that, I was thinking of hunting NW more next year.

Haha. Well I’m not saying it’s not worth hunting. I certainly continue to do it. There are pockets and honey holes to be found up here. I just don’t know that I would call it the deer hunting Mecca that southern Ohio seems to be. It’ll give you a decent challenge and a change of scenery here. Worth a shot I would say if you’ve never tried hunting here.

I grew up hunting Ottawa and Sandusky county. Traveled to Athens county to hunt for years. Quality of deer are to be had in other areas. I live in highland county and hunt northern and southern highland county. Almost like hunting two different states! Kinda like you say, pockets. I think every county is like that.

Interesting. Maybe the grass isn’t always greener. I’m sure it’s very heavily hunted down there. I’ve been through the hocking hills area a few times and seen some bruiser bucks around there. That’s another area I’d love to try.

Don’t let me talk you out of anything. There’s something in the hills that NW Ohio can’t duplicate.
