I received this just moments ago. 1900 sharp. I thought some of you would like this information I am bringing to share with you all. I have not been able to verify this information on ODNR. I do believe it though and have mixed feelings. I like the opportunity for myself and kids. I fear the divide it will bring.

Sincerely, Dave

Agreed increases opportunities for some but will further divide the hunting base.

Of dead deer....not necessarily hunters because for some they don't have a good location to hunt that has the numbers to support the added pressure
Yes, I was referring to the them tracking the herd by dead deer. We simply just hunt harder to kill what we do. After the year of widespread EHD, this has potential to be disastrous.

The Ohio deer herd is privatized, I seen a study where only 7% of deer are harvested on public. People will just use this opportunity to improve their chances to hunt a target buck.

Increased opportunity = increased numbers
Not necessarily.

Of the successful hunters in Ohio, the overwhelming majority only shoot 1 deer. An earlier gun hunting opportunity might only mean they shoot their 1 deer earlier in the season. What this could potentially do is just shift the timing of the harvest... which, in theory, could also slow the spread of CWD... ie less bucks available to travel/mingle/contact/breed other deer during the rut.

I'm not in favor of an earlier gun season. Not because of any effects on the satisfaction of a bowhunter, though. I think an early gun season could potentially remove a LOT of trophy class bucks from the gene pool prior to the rut. The longer a big deer with trophy genetics is on the landscape, the more likely he is to pass on those same genetics to future generations.

That being said... I'll believe it when I see it. I'm certainly not going to worry about it based on some random guy's perception of a comment made by one wildlife council member.

I see Iowa was mentioned... That's comparing apples to oranges...
A) Iowa does have an early muzzleloader season (residents only)...
B) Iowas gun season is in Dec...
C) Iowa deer seasons are zone specific not statewide...
D) As a non-resident I can expect to draw a tag every five years...
C) No crossbows in archery season, except handicapped...

So comparing Ohio to Iowa for an early general gun season is BULLSHIT...

Oh.... One other very important thing about Iowa...
HUNTING OVER BAIT IS ILLEGAL....

Let me add to this... If gun hunters are complaining that they miss out, maybe the state could solve this and the CWD problem by doing the following...
BAN DEER BAITING ( helps eliminate CWD ) AND IN EXCHANGE HAVE A WEEK LONG EARLY MUZZLELOADER SEASON FOR " RESIDENTS ONLY "..... Problem solved...

Probably all you need to see to know who's pulling ole Pauls strings and the real reason behind his question. An early gun season has been the objective of farm bureau for decades. Farm Bureau influence is the primary reason there's a bonus gun season and that early muzzleloader season we had for a bit.

So just so I’m understanding this correctly, this proposes an early gun like in oct, then regular gun, then 2 day bonus and then muzzy? Amish will be in paradise
It’s not proposing anything. It’s just some crotchety bowhunter insinuating a certain path in the future based on his own perception of one council member’s past comments.
