.50 beowolf for deer?

I seriously hope no one elects to use the .38 spl over the .357 mag.

I surely hope not. When handgun hunting went into effect in Ohio our group of 10-12 hunters held a meeting and said no one with a 357 Mag. would hunt with us. 41 Mag and larger was OK.
I still stand by that.

Care to elaborate? I have seen deer harvested with a 357 mag and it did a nice job. It's not the most powerful option but how does it compare to a .410 slug? Know an effective safe range and shot placement just like our archery friends.

Just IMHO. Ammo was a lot different 25 yrs. ago. There is a big difference between a shooter and a shootist. A shootist practices all year and takes that perfect shot. A shooter just goes out opening morning and blast away.

I would say a 357 mag. Has plenty of punch, but there are guys out there that would load up with 38 special. I have a Colt Python 357 mag but have never hunted with it other than turning a few opossums into dish rags. I have hunted with my Ruger super red hawk and it dose a nice job.

I plan on taking a 357 out for gun season because I already have one to use. I'll be careful with shot placement and make sure I have some good ammo and I think it'll be fine. There are definitely better calibers on the list but I think I can get by. Also out here my farthest shot at a deer was about 90 yards. Most have been 30 or closer.

Now don't take me wrong on using the 357 Mag. on deer. In the correct hands and picking the shot it'll work just fine. But in the wrong hands it'll just wound a lot of deer. Too many non-sportsmen think any hole punched through a deer will take it down. Well we all know it won't.
A point in mind. My nephew by marriage had a 357 Mag S&W 686 and on his very 1st morning out shot a nice buck at 50 yds. running and dropped it in it's tracks with a spine shot. Every deer since that has been wounded and got away. Thank goodness he sold it and I won't help find him another one. Wonder why?
