Cam and I ended our ice season with a great trip to Saginaw Bay. We caught a limit of perch each day with a lot of fish over 10” and the biggest just shy of 13”. We were fishing in 5’ of clear water so we could watch the fish as they swam through the holes. In addition to the 100’s of perch we saw, we saw 2 big pike and a walleye. The 1.4 mile walk towing a shanty and sled filled with our gear about killed me but it was worth every step.
Here is a recap of our 2020/21 ice season
We started our ice season with a weekend trip to Chautauqua Lake in NY on January 16. That was followed by return trips to Chautauqua the next two Saturdays. We then hit Lake St. Clair on February 7th. Feb 13/14 took us to Saginaw Bay for the first time. We stayed in state hitting East Harbor, Whites Landing, and Lake Erie the next couple of weeks. Last Saturday we returned to Lake St. Clair and then finished out the season on Saginaw Bay.
I put roughly 1,700 miles on my truck, got a speeding ticket, put a screw in my tire, dropped a knife down a hole, had frozen hands and toes on several occasions but the memories made and laughs shared made it all worth while. I couldn’t ask for two better fishing partners than Dom Fratta and Cam. I could not be more proud of Cam. He is a great helper and a very good ice fisherman for a 7yr old. He loves every second of being on the ice. Most days we would start the day before the sun was up and didn’t quit until it was almost dark. We mainly targeted yellow perch (kept a little over 250 on the year) but we also caught crappie, blue gills, bullheads, bass, walleye, and a gold fish. Next ice season can’t get here fast enough.
