Aces and Eights..

I really don't know what I'd do if I were you, Joe. That 8 is a stud... If I saw him where I hunt, he'd be a target, without a doubt. But the area you're hunting doesn't compare... The same rules don't apply. Knowing that there are multiple, MULTIPLE, bucks bigger than that 8 running around certainly makes the decision difficult. Opening day, let him walk. December or later, let him have it. I know I'm renigging on my previous attitude toward this buck... But thinking about it now, I think I'd do the same thing that you're doing.

Like I told you on the phone today. If your on a property that is known for big deer then don't shoot the smaller ones. Go by the standards of the deer on that property. Like has been said before, It's easy for those of us that will or never have had opportunities at bucks of this caliber to judge and tell you your fuggin crazy for not shooting a certain buck. It's not us that has to live with your decisions. Besides, It's not like that $24 tag in your pocket is the only tag. You got doe tags so it's not like your going to go without meat in the freezer. If that buck tag is still in your pocket at the end of the season so what ? Look at it as a donation to the ODNR and a chance at an even bigger buck next year. On the flip side, don't regret holding onto that tag either. It's better to not live with regret. It's haunting.

It's times like these that I think trail cams are a curse. If we didn't know what else was lurking out there we wouldn't be having discussions like these. On the other hand, it might stop some from shooting the smaller bucks and letting them grow up to be big bucks. It's a catch 22 all around.

In the end. If it makes your wiener dance and tickle, then SHOOT it.

After reading all the post since my last and knowing that Joe is in an area of several much bigger bucks roaming around I can see why he'd pass the tall 8 now. I hope he gets by till next year so's you can place him on your target list then. Killing remorse is just like buyers remorse, it sucks! I'd hold out for Tank or the next big monster that walks by, then have fun shedding this winter and spring! Goodluck Joe! There has been some great posts about your decision but your the one who's in the game!

.

Not the one i was looking for... But i found the Tall 8...... Another buck came out right behind him that I think is the wide 8.. Video of that soon.

A little history here for the new people. Had this buck on cam in June and July over salt.... Lost him for a couple weeks and got some good pics of him about a mile away on another salt block... This video is maybe 3/4 mile from there... From Summer to fall habitat this buck moved over 1 3/4 miles.

That's them... If the wind is se in the morning that's where I'd be... Tank will be doing the same thing if he's still there.

I had the Tall-8 below at 50 and 40 yards tonight in the cut corn field... He shoved a doe out of the woods and she worked her way over to my at about 15 yards. He walked along, made a scrape and came within 40 yards. He kept watching the doe and would grunt at her, then feed around.. I looked and looked at him, every angle there was, and came to the same conclusion, not a shooter. These pics are even deceptive, the cam pics add inches. Sure he's tall, But he's inside his ears, and has nothing for mass. So i let him walk, the doe went back to him and i grunted a little just messing around. Just some soft grunts, she came right back, he stood there and watched, for shits and giggles i wanted to check his temperature, I did a real light snort wheeze, he stood there for a good two minutes still as a statue, then turned slowly, put his head down and left her ass alone in the field. he moved off slowly, not spooked, just wasn;t looking for a fight.. A doe he watched so intently, a doe he was pushing and chasing, he just left her and moseyed on about his business.... If I was a betting man i would say he know there is something lurking out there that can on any given day whip his ass.. And i believe i saw that deer last night, a heavy beamed deer that should go 150 if the other side matches. And he's not tank..

wow Id of smoked his ass! Hope one of the bigger boys steps out in the next few weeks

After having that boss hog 150 at 15 yards last night it made the decision a little easier tonight on the tall8. It was a tough decision still though.. If he would have hung around at 15 yards instead of 40 i might not have had the will power. lol.. I guess in the end though i've always told myself that when i see a shooter i'll know it no questions asked, and I was 2nd guessing this deer tonight.. While he would be the biggest i've ever shot. I KNOW there are better deer in the area. I still have the rut, and 3 gun seasons, like the tall 8, the season is young.
