Hello fellow hunters and Lab lovers! I wanted to let you all know that my AKC Registered lab has a litter of pups that will available for pick up late March. It’s a perfect time to get that hunting dog you always wanted and be in the woods with your new hunting buddy this fall. Or maybe the kids need a companion either way you can’t go wrong with a Lab.

Ella (bitch)is a silver. The sire is from Silverwaterlabs kennel in Ohio, his name is Ranger and is a silver factored chocolate. We have 2 males (1 chocolate and 1 silver) 3 f

emales and one of them is chocolate.

To start with, it's not a recognized color by the AKC, which causes folks some heartburn. However, the AKC does recognize a wide-range of shades in yellow from "vanilla" like my pup, to fox reds. Those variations in shade are under less scrutiny genetically speaking. Traditionally, there were no variations in blacks and chocolates (the other two recognized colors), then silver came along and they're a "diluted" chocolate. Many people feel, including some of the world's larger kennel associations, that silvers are the result of "unscrupulous" breeding habits and there's some science to back that theory up. The same "dilution" gene that allows for the expression of the "genetic mutation" (silver coat) is also found in Weimaraners.

You can register a silver with AKC and it will go in as a chocolate, but whether it meets breed standards is a whole different Pandora's box.

Personally I love the look of a silver lab. Hell, the look of any good lab is down right impressive. Temperament doesn’t change with the color of the coat either, just the owner.

They do have some health issues more than the standard labs.... Take that for what it’s worth.... If you like em, buy em.... Don’t worry wahat others think...

I’ve had the main 3 colors. Black is inherently less problems. Yellows are worst for skin problems if they have pink noses which usually means pink skin. Been there done that. I don’t mind the silvers but why not call them silver chocolates instead of making it sound like another recognized color. Good luck, hard to go wrong w any lab unless it’s a puppy mill lineage. I typically go for the in between hunting and hunt test lineage. Of course there are exceptions to anything and most “nondisired stupid dogs” are due to the owner/handler.

There's nothing snotty about it, Clay. You're right, some of the worst dogs are indeed purebred. BUT... there's a reason why you don't see mutts at field trials and hunt tests. And how many mutts have you seen in the back of a police K-9 cruiser? How many drug sniffing dogs out there are mutts? Dogs leading the blind? Etc etc etc.

I had a big long post typed up and I deleted it all because now I just feel bad about derailing this dude's thread. (Even though I really shouldn't because he's got less than a dozen posts and now just wants to use the platform to sell something... But I digress.) I'm not a fan of silvers. I don't think they should be promoted. Folks wanted to know why and now you know. If it makes me look like an asshole, I'm okay with that. There's a lot of other assholes that are in my corner on this "issue."

Now be honest, there's an absolute ton of dog snobbery in the judging of these events too. Even with coon dog hunts where points to plus and minus are very set in the field, if you show up and whip everyones ass with a poodle the judges will likely kill you on the table.

I am guessing that you are in the corner of not thinking Silvers are purebreds. I know that is a huge controversy. AKC doesn't recognize the color but does allow them to be registered as Chocolate. Some say they were crossed with Weimer. Some say it is a diluted D Gene same as color variations of yellows. I don't know either way. It's all interesting for me. I have one so I may be biased. Didn't get her because of her color or pedigree though. We will see how she turns out. Only 11 months now.

I really don't know because I've never seen it. Hell, I can count on one hand just how many chocolate labs I've seen at trials, let alone silver's or mix breeds. It's 70% blacks and 28% yellows for the most part. Sure you'd get some attention running with a mutt... But most retriever judges are pretty straight up from what I've seen. If a dog can do the work it can pass the test. Thing is, most other dogs just can't. I get what you're saying though.

Well, purebred Labs haven't been documented carrying the recessive dilute alleles, at least not that I'm aware of. So that basically leaves two potential scenarios. 1., The dd allele was a simple gene mutation that came out of nowhere, and was selected for in subsequent breeding's, or 2., The recessive alleles were introduced by cross breeding with a known carrier of the dilute alleles, like a Weimereiner. I don't know what my stance is as far as Silvers being "purebred" or not. But to me, scenario #2 seems to be the most probable, especially considering how most every Silver I've seen has a weird, non-Labradorish look to it.
