One way too keep his memory forever is too share it with others.... I’ve lost my fare share of dogs in my 60 years, sharing the memories is pretty therapeutic....

I lost him a couple years after I retired. I still cant look at pictures of him. His name is on the Ohio Police K-9 memorial wall and Ive never gone to see it. I did get his name as my license plate and his badge is hanging in my truck. Ive had three dogs since he died but cant seem to really bond with any of them. Recently I got a Chesapeake Bay Retriever pup to duck hunt. He is an amazing dog but we just found out he is blind in one eye due to a genetic defect. Thre breeder offered a new pup whenever we are ready even if it is 10 years in the future. Named him Goose and he is definitely my dog!
I feel ya on the new dog thing. I actually feel bad for how much this “new one” pissed me off. Knowing that it isn’t the dogs fault, I never took the time to train him correctly. So he’s a dumbass because of it. Kind of dumbass that could file for benefits.
We get that once in a lifetime dog, unfortunately they don’t seem too last as long as the dogs from hell....

I can tell you this much. Several years ago there was a large Police K-9 competition at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Dogs from everywhere. There were 5 different events. Bronson, my K-9, took the gold medal in 4 of the 5 events and the silver medal in the other. The silver medal was completely my fault. Bronson alerted and I didnt believe him so I made him search the hangar again. We lost that round by 3 seconds and he did the whole damned hanger twice! He was named Top Dog and won all kinds of equipment including a unit that automatically rolled the cruiser windows down and paged the handler if the cruiser got too hot. I already had one in my cruiser so I gave it to another contestant who didnt have one. Damn I miss my boy
Amazing how time flies by, Simon is semi-retired due to the laws changing around weed, he is still on call for track/search and bite. But his replacement is in training currently and our SIL will be starting this road-trip all over again.
Simon is showing his age, in both graying muzzle and arthritis in the hind end, but he doesn’t let it slow him down because he’s still a freight train on the hit.
He’s still the same couch potato while he’s home, until he sees the uniform put on, then it’s all business. I don’t think he’ll ever lose that drive.
