The only thing I asked for this year was the Carhart vest, but the wife came through with a couple pieces of Lodge cast iron too. The griddle will be perfect for grilled cheese, which I make all the time for the girls. I've wanted the grill pan for a few years and the scrub brush will come in super handy for the grill pan! I thought the pink thing was a little vulgar, turns out it holds bacon grease. 😂 It'll hold a cup of bacon grease and has a built-in strainer to catch the big chunks of bacon. Pretty neat little contraption once you really you can't fugg it 😂

So, what did ya get!?!

  • My same annual new 'Ariat' leather boots that I get each year. I've been wearing that exact pair of boot for about 15 years now.
  • 'ePower 360' safety lantern.
  • Insulated 'The American Outdoorsman' pair of pants w/ a nice flannel shirt and thermal inner shirt.
  • And a finally, a real cool 'Buck' Christmas ornament for the Christmas Tree.
I feel blessed!

The subject of "all time great gifts" came up this morning and it reminded me that 20 years ago today, I received my first means of legal archery hunting when my parents gave me a Bear Whitetail II. I eventually sold the bow to my neighbor with the option of being the first to buy it back. 15 years passed, then this summer, after I moved back into my childhood home, he gifted me the bow back. Archery and bowhunting is arguably the single greatest gift ever bestowed upon me. This time 20 yards ago, I was practicing and by 2:30PM, I'd already missed a deer with it. When that arrow dove low and I realized I'd missed, my first thought was: "I have to get good at this!" The rest is history, and I'm still trying to get good at it!

What's one of the more memorable or most practical gift you've ever received?

As a kid I generally received firearms for Christmas and birthdays but my two most memorable gifts was my first brand new 12 gauge I got for Christmas when I was 12 or 13 and my first .22 which is still my favorite! A marlin 39A!

I busted a couple of tree squirrels promptly after getting that 12! One of my first solo hunts which sparked a huge fire within me.

I didn’t grow up in a house with gifts, we always got what we needed. I had to freeze my ass off one year to wait till Christmas to get a coat. The lessons that came with gifts like that really made a person.

What defined me was a bike in the summer of 1992’. Dad knew my bike was worn out and I was ready for a new one. He took me to the store on my birthday to pick one out. Of coarse I wanted the freestyle with the mag wheels. That was way beyond the budget, he was more in the $40 range and the one I wanted was $300. My heart was crushed...what he said to me was priceless.

“I’ll make you a deal. I’ll give you $40 towards whatever bike you want, you need to earn the rest”

I scraped a giant white barn with a 3” double sided scraper. It’s on the corner of edgefield and reiman road outside of Genoa Ohio. The old man that I made the deal with was so impressed that I finished it that he paid me $500. His grandson owned a roofing company and I started with him after that job was done. Just a ground kid that picked up shingles and nails.

So the greatest gift I ever got was the freestyle bike.
