I had an awesome opportunity to partake in the Best of the West Long Range Hunting Academy yesterday and boy was it an awesome experience! Until yesterday at 2P, I'd never hit a target beyond 475 yards. By the time we were done, I'd "killed" animals at 485, 885, and 1,000 yards. I shot two soccer ball-ish sized groups on the 1,000 yard target, which is a testament to the gun and the spotter. I have a good trigger pull thanks to shooting a back tension release in archery and that certainly translated to the range. The instructors were complementary of our entire group, so I know there's at least 9 other 1,000 yard clubers walking around town, including one of the local Mayors! Most of the guns available were $10K systems, making the most expensive guns I've ever touched, let alone shot. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn how to shoot beyond 250 yards.

How do you think you’d of fared with your hunting rifle?
I don't own a hunting rifle...

I'm being slightly coy in that I've never hunted anything but a coyote with an actual centerfire rifle. I think I could have hit the 500-yard targets with my 6.5 and 30-06, but maybe not without a better understanding of the wind and MOA adjustments, which I gained during the morning session of the class. Having never shot either of those guns beyond 475 yards, I probably would have wasted a lot of lead looking for a good hit at 885 and 1,000. The last time I shot both of those at 8" steel at 475, I was routinely making it ring, so I had some fundamentals to build upon yesterday.
