Again time to update this!! Man it just seems there isn't enough time in a day anymore. Friday Allen and I headed down for the second gun season. Got about a 3 hour later start than I had hoped but hey, it wouldn't be any different than any other time. Saturday morning we headed out to one of our elevated shacks since it was raining and supposed to be crappy most of the day. It is situated in a SW corner of a cut cornfield. Up until 11 am we ended up seeing 9 does/yearlings which is a sign of us not shooting them for many years. Perhaps we finally have made the turn on our deer numbers. Also saw a bunch of turkeys.
At 2 pm we were sitting there actually goofing around when all of a sudden a real good buck was trotting right at us. Was at least a 3 1/2 year old 8 point. Allen got the muzzleloader out the window and was just lining up the scope when it was like that buck hit a brick wall. Sure enough he winded us and soon was headed away from us too fast for Allen to make a shot. That was one thing I knew I screwed up on that morning, not smoking up because we got in so late and it was raining when we were getting ready to go out.
Later that evening Allen spotted a buck right behind the blind in the woods, just down the hill. A real nice 8 point, maybe 2 1/2 year old, was working a scrape and slowly walked past us. Allen had all kinds of trouble trying to find him in the scope, the result of having it up on 5 power and this buck was only at about 15 yards! Soon the buck got into too much thick stuff to be able to make any kind of a decent shot. Allen was clearly frustrated but we hoped the buck would work his way around and into another opening.
As we waited to see what that buck was going to do I looked out into the cornfield and sure enough there were two huge bucks standing out there under 80 yards out!! I can only imagine what we looked like scrambling from the rear of the shack to the side to the front trying to now get on one of these two giants standing there looking at us! Just as Allen got the gun out the window and was trying to settle it on the first buck that deer turned and ran straight away. The second buck was right behind him. A third was a little further out that we hadn't noticed!! I think we both were about to cry right then but after talking about it all we found humor in it how we must have looked. I know my heart was pumping and so was his, felt like mine was in my throat!
Right at dark as we were finishing packing up our things two more bucks came out and worked their way across the cornfield, both nice young 8 points. It was one incredible day of hunting with 9 does & yearlings, 7 bucks and 1 unknown seen.
Sunday morning it was pouring down rain so we elected to wait a bit before heading out. Once we were out there we ended up seeing a doe and two yearlings but that was it. On the way out we got to take in some of the sights and walk the stream a little. I had a ball this weekend and I think Allen did as well.
