Beau’s First deer—
This was my boys first weekend without any obligation so my wife and I decided to give the boys a night off from martial arts one would go with me and the other could have some alone time (this rarely happens being twins). Beau decided he would hunt with me and wanted to go to the same stand he shot the forky from which I he hit in no man’s land and believe he lived. In the rush to get to the stand I forgot to pack my boots and drive barefoot on a regular basis, which led to me hunting barefoot. It was a slow night for this particular stand but we had a good wind, I stated to have doubts thinking the stand was burnt out .About 630ish to twin button bucks slowly worked their out of bedding area and took the killing trail to right in front of us. I called it the killing trail because I’ve killed more than a handful of does walking this same trail over the years. Beau slowly picked up the crossbow and stood up leaning into me to shoulder the crossbow and see through the scope. After asking “what line” I told him top, and I whispered to find the front leg and follow it up to behind the shoulder like we practiced. He gives me a ready whisper I let out a maahhh to stop the deer and Beau pulls the trigger, he hits a little back, but clips both lungs and liver. The deer mule kicks, walks away slowly with tail whisking back and forth like a windshield wiper. I knew then it was a dead deer. After watching the deer walk off I proceed to hug and shake my boy while repeating “you got him”. We get down from the stand go pick up his arrow then go back to the truck where I drink a couple beers and watch my son continue to shake. I decide to run home to get boots then proceed pick up the blood after dark. We find the deer still alive which beau puts a second arrow in him to ease his suffering. We hug, rejoice and thank the deer for its life then begin dragging the deer out together.
