Hahaha! Betty is slowly getting better at her couch routine. LolAwesome!!! My dog has the laying on the couch part down pretty good but the other stuff not so much lol!!!
I can tell Betty wants to get back into as much as I do. Being cooped up all winter really takes its toll. I had her out a few days ago doing some OB stuff, pattern blinds, and a brief T drill. I could just see it in her eyes... "Yes! Finally I get to do some work again!" LolAwesome Jim, I know the feeling about being ready to train again. Next week we are going to start back up and prepare to run a few test this year as well.
Wow, gorgeous dog you got there. We had one and she died at 1 year old due to cancer and she was a spitting image of yours. Looks like you guys had a great season!
Thanks. That was a special one for sure. Only bird I got that day. 3 mallards came over from the NE and swung out in front of me. The wind was blowing really hard so they fought it to get into the spread and started to land a little short. I took the shot on the lone drake at about 35 yds and he start to sail downwind. He hit the water about 100 yds or so away and I sent Betty. Though the waves and wind were pushing him away, she ran that sucker down and plucked him from under the water as he dove. Sure enough, when she got back to my side I saw that shiny bracelet it was wearing. I'll never forget it.Nice pics. Looks like you guys had a great season! I really like the pic of her holding the banded mallard

There's really no substitute for actual hunting experience and shooting birds over the dog. You just can't replicate things like diving ducks or crippled birds running into cover in your back yard. A week hunting in North Dakota is worth an entire season hunting in Ohio. I also guided hunters one day at a private club... There was almost 20 retrieves just that day alone. All that hunting experience was invaluable... But now I'm working on correcting a few bad habits formed along the way. That's awesome man! I'd blow up that pic and frame it on the wall.
92 retrieves is crazy. I think my dog only had 12 duck retrieves and a few doves lol. Just never had much luck the days I took her, either I'd whiff on the shots or just wouldn't see birds. I think she can be a great retriever if I can just do my part and get her on more birds.
Heck yea, thanks! Cruz is an amazing dog. And although the dam, Molly, is not titled she is also a phenomenal pointer. Betty throws some pretty consistent points but I haven't spent the necessary time it takes to polish that skill. She will point nearly every bird that holds for her, but she doesn't stay pointing for very long...typically only 5-10 seconds. She needs more birds shot over her in the upland and maybe some more whoa training. I think she'll get there eventually. It's a beautiful thing seeing a Lab lock up on point.Cool thread good read! I am familiar with the Sire of Betty, curious were you able to get her to hold solid points? I have 2 Pointing labs out of Tiger Mountain, amazing dogs. You are correct in saying a week in North Dakota is a season in Ohio. I would even go out there and say it better than 2 seasons in Ohio depending on the year. We go for 14 days every year between duck and Phez dog and easily get over 100 retrieves. Look forward to future post.
