Booner Survey....

Never had the opportunity to kill one, but have had 4 within 100yrds thru my 29 years of hunting, 8-10 seen in total (always doing mach 7 the other way) and all north of Rt. 30. Biggest by far was laying under a loading dock in Ravenna Arsenal just outside our sector. No doubt over 200" of nontypical, double drop tine awesomeness. He just watched as I walked thru the open field 100yrds away and humvees drove by on the road multiple times.

This fella missed on gross by 4.5", but ya can't eat em so I don't chase em. If luck & opportunity cross I'll take it lol.

My brother (GRHS) never shot a buck bigger than a fork and loved Button Buck meat. Smashed them with a 12ga and slept like a baby. Used to tease Big Bro that he put corn on his barrel and gave the lil guys flash burns...

He got a tatoo, "born to hunt" with a big old booner on it.... dreams and reality. He was a proud card carrying member of the club.

I'm a half year to 2.5 year old assassin... Never laid eyes on a booner afield. Only seen two from the road in 25years....Ive wasted alot of gas and time over the years looking.

I rattled in a 170” clean ten in on a ridge top that I video’d for just over 13 minutes on a 8mm camera at 35 yards. I put out some Trails End 209 or something like that(anise smelling junk!) that put of his spidey senses bigtime. He turned and walked away with ears laid back slowly in the direction he came from towards the breeding party he left 15 minutes earlier. @Fullbore found one side of his sheds nearly 2 miles away. The next year we sat up on the hill 60 yards into the direction he came from one November morning and we both had him walk by us 80 yards apart and neither got a shot op at him. I video’d him again but he was 45 yards out and moving swiftly and I posted the video on TOO as well. He blew up to 195” adding 25”. A local guy who never really shot anything big was on stand during a really big deer drive and looked behind him BEFORE the drive started and this deer was walking towards the area being pushed. Shot him at close to mid range as he walked slowly with its head down. Right place right time with a lot of luck involved. We were happy for the guy and glad he got one for his wall.
This is the only true for sure Booner I had an encounter with that I know of. I did during my very greenhorn days toting my Bear Whitetail with a 20-30-40 yard pin setup walk upon a true slunger walking from right to left out in the open of a pump jack head that stopped perfectly broadside. I estimated him to be 45 and put the 40 on his spine just behind the shoulder and touched it off. Turns out 60 looks a lot like 45 and a xx75 2018 drops like a rock at 55lb draw weight. My heart sank watching that huge double row of tines rock back on his head and lumber straight away from me. Looking back, he was probably an easy boon qualifier but I was pretty calm cuz I didn’t really know enough about how special and hard it is to get an opportunity at one. It was and is one of my most prized hunting memories to this day and I didn’t even draw blood that day but I learnt something in the process.
