Box Turtles

Not a box turtle, but in keeping with the tradition of roadside assistance for turtles courtesy of TOO members, rescued this one on our road moments ago. Put him on the other side (where he was headed) and pointed him back through the culvert in case he wanted to be over there. The girls got to see him up close, so that was cool TOO!

Not a box turtle, but these guys are really cool. This is a Blandings Turtle. They are classified as either 'Threatened' or a 'Species of Concern.' I can't remember which. Anyway you don't see them very often. This one was a male. Found him crossing the road on a little excursion.

@jagermeister that's pretty damn cool man. The Audobon society here had one on loan for rehab from somewhere recently. I bet I stood there and looked at this turtle for 30 minutes trying to figure out what it was. I had never seen one before. Looked like a cross between a water turtle with smooth skin, a land turtle shell, and a high S bendable neck like a tortoise. Eventually a curator walked by so I could ask.

That's a cool looking turtle Jim. Can't say I have ever seen one of those before.

Pretty cool find Scott. It's not everyday you find a baby snapper like that. Nest can't be too far away.

When I lived out of town, one sept. I had a steady stream of these guys crawling up the drive way and into my garage. Has anyone ever found a box turtle that size ?

Come to think of it, never in my life have I seen a small box turtle. Probably seen a hundred of them but never a small one, or even a half sized one. They must grow very fast to adult size then live forever at that size.

Not a box turtle . But helped this big gal across the Rd today . One of the bigger ones I've ever seen . Pics don't do justice . Was truely as big as the end of a drum. I suspect she was laying eggs somewhere and returning to a pond that was 100 yds downhill from the Rd she was crossing. .
