In 1994 and again in 1996, the biggest known deer killed in all of North America were killed within 10 miles of my home. My FIL had video taped the 1996 buck in his yard! At that time there were more deer around here than you could shake a stick at. That is relative of course, as some of you live in areas with more deer now than we had then, but compared to now....we had it made! Both of those deer were on the cover of NAW. We saw a lot of non-residents after that! :)

I was absolutely whipped by a deer tonight. I mean beat like I haven't been beaten in a long, long time. I walked right at 1000 yards across a wheat field thinking it would actually be a sneakier approach since I would not be close to any of the thickets that might be holding deer. That part went well I thought. At prime time, I hear a deer, alone and heavy sounding off to my left. GREAT! I've got the wind, it sounds like it's coming up a trail that dumps right out where I want it which should provide me a 20-25 yard shot. My heart is beating out of my chest, just knowing this sucker is going to pop out and be the one we've looked for all season. Then, I hear the deer's line of travel change. It walks right over behind my blind (keep in mind there is no good way to do this as it is mighty thick), strolls right up to what I am guessing is 5 yards or so and stomps, and stomps, and stomps one more time. I almost cried as I heard the deer turn and walk right back the way it had come in. This is the 7th time I've hunted this blind. I've seen deer 5 out of the other 6 times, and quite a few of them. We have NEVER had a deer do that, nothing even remotely close to that. There is no way for me to know if it was the one we are looking for, but my heart tells me it was. I want to scream or something... but it won't fix it, so I'll just whine on this little thread and try again tomorrow. :)

Does tend to travel in a pack this time of year... :( I hope it wasn't him, but I can't help thinking it was. Hopefully, he is the only mature deer in Ohio with short term memory issues and will come in tomorrow evening so Mason can get this thing over with! There was a small herd of deer around my truck when I arrived after dark. If Mason would just kill this thing, I could crawl up in a tree close to the truck and just hunt a "good" deer.

My neighbor left a patch of beans standing here by our woods. There is an over head powerline that is a little low. His son was afraid of hanging the combine up in the line, so he left the beans. They were in the shop last night and said I could chop 'em down and feed them to the deer. I'll work on that tomorrow. Who ever thought I'd be weed-whacking soybeans in January? You'll do some crazy things for deer...
