I was absolutely whipped by a deer tonight. I mean beat like I haven't been beaten in a long, long time. I walked right at 1000 yards across a wheat field thinking it would actually be a sneakier approach since I would not be close to any of the thickets that might be holding deer. That part went well I thought. At prime time, I hear a deer, alone and heavy sounding off to my left. GREAT! I've got the wind, it sounds like it's coming up a trail that dumps right out where I want it which should provide me a 20-25 yard shot. My heart is beating out of my chest, just knowing this sucker is going to pop out and be the one we've looked for all season. Then, I hear the deer's line of travel change. It walks right over behind my blind (keep in mind there is no good way to do this as it is mighty thick), strolls right up to what I am guessing is 5 yards or so and stomps, and stomps, and stomps one more time. I almost cried as I heard the deer turn and walk right back the way it had come in. This is the 7th time I've hunted this blind. I've seen deer 5 out of the other 6 times, and quite a few of them. We have NEVER had a deer do that, nothing even remotely close to that. There is no way for me to know if it was the one we are looking for, but my heart tells me it was. I want to scream or something... but it won't fix it, so I'll just whine on this little thread and try again tomorrow.
