Buck Forage Oats

I didn't measure them but I want to say 5-6 inches. They are coming in thick. I deleted all the doe pics. Should have saved one to show the growth. The WI oats are 3-4 inches and not as thick.

I might as well have not planted if it doesn't rain soon. Looks like a chance of a pop up today, if not it could be another 8 days. We haven't had real rain in 10 days as is...

The oats I planted 8-16 is spotty and probably everything that's coming up is the 2014 crop I tilled under. Only rain was 8-20 and that was only enough to stain the sidewalk. Sunday night we got a light sprinkle that didn't even wet the sidewalk. With a flock of about 40 turkeys on cam everyday since planting I don't have much hope of a crop.
If we do get some decent rain I got some Easy Plot and Winter greens to seed. That'll be better than bear dirt.

Same here man. Even left work early to drive to the farm and check on a couple pop ups that showed in the area. Drier than a popcorn fart...

Guys... This is another reason you don't plan oats in August. Fuggin droughts. I've never planted them earlier than first week of September and always had good stands by the time bow season rolls around. You want the oats 5-6'' tall in October, not right now.

I planted a mix, it wasn't just oats. I probably should of waited until this week to plant though. Oh well, ya live and learn, I've only been doing this for a few years.

Well here it is September 3rd and no rain and only a slim chance on Thursday then none to speak of for 7 days. Then it's about Sept. 10 so we're running out of time. Damn rain or should say no rain.

I've always planted the 2nd week of August with great results but this is my first time planting oats. I have to take advantage of planting opportunities because I don't have a lot of time off in the late summer and it MUST be dry to get the tractor on top of the hill.

Time. That's what dictates when I plant more than what's best for the seed. I don't have time in September to plant. So yes, it may be better to wait, but not if I can't find a chance to get seed in the ground...

its better to have seed in the ground and no rain to make it sprout than to have seed sprouted and nothing to drink....
