I might be ready to try the Butt Out tool. Every time I try to cut around the anus I end up just making a terrible mess and it never works. I think I need a longer, thinner knife compared to the one I have been using.

I quit splitting the bone when I watched a butchering clinic at the D&T expo about 10 years ago. The guy pointed out that is was better to leave that meat alone, and not expose it to dirt, debris, and bone matter. The light bulb kinda went off and I haven't bothered pulling out the saw ever since.
Yep... You need a fairly long knife (not necessarily filet knife length) and it HAS to be sharp. If it's not sharp enough, you just end up tearing and "stirring" it all around instead of slicing it free.

I don't think it's so much longer and thinner. It's more having a really sharp knife. I have rung the anus with a regular pocket knife before and had everything pull right out. You just have to make sure to get it cut in a complete circle.

I've used it a few times and had nothing but glaring success with it. I absolutely hate using a knife, it's a pain in the ass, and not for the deer!

Ricer has it the knife must be very sharp,I don't carry a second knife for cutting around the anus but I make sure my knife is razor sharp.
I was also taught to break the pelvis but I find slitting instead of splitting quicker and cleaner
I have never tried a filet knife but I would think the flexible blade would actually hinder instead of help
