Christmas Traditions

The wife and I make cookies, we’ve done it most of our married adult lives (read since the kids were born) and this year is no different.
No bakes, the kiss cookies the buckeyes, apricot kolache and 15 dozen vanilla pizzelles this evening.
I think that should do it.

They’re not the prettiest, but they taste damn good!

We have a tradition too. We are known for big balls. Even the Hicks tree has big balls. Some people put the angel on top last. Our tree is never done until Dad hangs his huge balls under the tree. Always the last items to be. . . .hung.

Our tree has a bulb from every year since we’ve been married. So basically every bulb has a year on it. Currently @41 bulbs and climbing….

Christmas Eve dinner is the big deal - sviat vechir - it's meatless and has 12 dishes, but I only prepare four.
Borscht, stuffed cabbage, pierogi, baked fish
As my family ages, it's up to me to keep these traditions alive. Nobody else seems to care.

I’ve had borsht in the past. It definitely tastes better than it looks

Peirogis I grew up on as our parochial school had them at Easter time, .05 a piece at lunchtime and it didn’t take long to get your fill for a quarter!
All the moms would arrive Friday mornings and start making them for lunch/dinner carry outs.

Gingerbread houses with the kids. They were little when we first started and now they’re in college. My wife had them baked and ready to decorate when our son got home last Friday.

At some point it became a competition (like 99% of everything we do ). Each year it’s Mom and Son versus Dad and Daughter. Clearly the house on the left was this year’s winner.

Yep we’ve done that with sauerkraut.

Good eye!! A Dots star that was hand cut with my pocketknife. It’s the craftsmanship and details that matter.
