Crappies!

I can't decide if I should fish or turkey hunt in the morning. I plan to do one of 'em unless the weather gets bad....then I will sleep. :)

I haven't been since last Sunday evening. It got cold that day, but the fish were still willing to bite at Rocky Fork. We did have to move off the banks and fish a little deeper to get the big ones though. They didn't move far, just into a little deeper water (about 10 feet) around submerged wood. They will yoyo back and forth like that with cold fronts that come through all spring until they are done spawning. The water was still hovering between 50 and 55, I suspect it has been about the same all week with cool temps at night.

All i got was a small largemouth. The south east wind was coming straight up the lake and right into my face. they will move into that cove eventually, they always do. We need a good string of warm dry days and warm nights.

Mason and I decided to go between rain showers today. It didn't work out, we got soaked! Before we got pushed off the lake, we did get in a couple hours of fishing in light rain and some sunshine. Everyone we talked to claimed to be "in 'em", but they said they were all kinda small. Mason and I did catch a lot of small ones, but a slight change put us back in the good ones. The one pictured is the best of the bunch at a shade over 16". I lost another as I tried swinging it into the boat that was as good as this one. We got four over 13'' and several more around 12''. I really wish we had more time!

MREX------ The DoW hit one out of the park when they implemented the 9" size limits several years ago. The first year or two it was hard to catch a 9''er, now they look like the babies they are! I'm not anti-DoW at all, sometimes they are right!

That's a HOG! Reminds me of southern crappie. Growing up Crappie fishing I remember filling half a 48 quart icechest with ones like that. Pig!

I took the yack out this evening and got soaked also. I did manage 5 around 11 inches in just three hours. Really all in 30 min once i found them. They were holding in about 20 foot of water at 15 feet. A white twister tail on a silver Beatlespin With an orange jig head did them in.

I agree the Dow hit one out of the park with the 9 inch limit on our lake. I can see a drastic improvement in the quality of the crappie. Before all you could do was catch 6 inchers. Now I'm seeing more fish right at 9 inches with some an inch or two over. I bet the chinamen are pissed. Lol.

It has made a HUGE difference on Paint and Rocky Fork. It only took a few years too. There is no trouble catching "legal" fish anymore, and I suspect it will only get better before leveling off. I think the limit has only be in place for four yrs or so.

finally! i get to post a pic in the crappie thread!

managed to catch about 60 today. unfortunately, these are the only ones of legal size. The smallest just made the 9 inch limit, the biggest was at 12 1/2 inches. looks like us shore fisherman are gonna get some action.

I much prefer the look of a dark colored black crappie over a white. i caught about 20 fish just like this one today, too bad none of them were big enough.

I can't explain it, but we are still catching good crappies right up on the banks. They are mostly blacks, all of the egg-less variety. Still, I don't understand why they are there...water temp is 76.
